Chapter 589

A sour pang seized Joseph's chest. Was he truly a monster? Had he committed a grave error? His intentions were never to imprison Cassie; he merely believed she was battling depression. His original plan was to provide Cassie with a fortune, enough to last her lifetime, once she bore a child. Then she could leave. Why did it have to end with Cassie's death? Joseph felt as though he had been encased in ice. In the end, Laura departed with Cassie.

Images of their initial encounters flashed across Joseph's mind like a slideshow.

"I am genuinely ill, but not mentally. I suffer from lovesickness.

"Joseph, when you close your eyes, your features are so irresistibly handsome.

"I want to be your wife.

"I swear, from this moment forward, I will only treat you kindly and honor my promises to you."

It appeared that Cassie had once been endearing and beautiful, akin to a playful, foxy lady. But when did his perception of Cassie shift to a constant image of resentment? Had he pushed her into this state? In this moment, Joseph felt as lost and helpless as a child. He couldn't even recall how he managed to leave the hospital.

Megan materialized before Joseph, her eyes reddened by guilt. "This is my fault. I assumed her depression was mild; I didn't anticipate it being this severe. Fifteen percent of people with depression can't bear it and resort to suicide. I should have personally treated her. I'm sorry."

Joseph strode past Megan as if her words had fallen on deaf ears. His mind was consumed with the image of Cassie, her eyes forever closed in death. What had he been doing when she drew her last breath?

"Joseph," Megan extended her hand to grasp Joseph's.

In response, Joseph angrily swatted Megan's hand away and roared, "Enough! This is all Nathan's doing. If it weren't for his actions, Laura wouldn't be in trouble, I wouldn't have confined Cassie, Cassie wouldn't have deteriorated and attempted to kill me, and our children wouldn't be dead. I should never have helped Nathan."

In aiding Nathan, Joseph had lost his twins and Cassie had lost her life.

Was it truly worth it?

Joseph was suddenly consumed by a profound doubt.

Had he helped a lowlife like Nathan, and was this God's retribution?

"I'm sorry, I didn't foresee this outcome," Megan stammered, terrified by Joseph's wrathful demeanor. She had never seen him look so fearsome.

If it had been before...

Joseph instantly regretted his harsh words to Megan.

But Cassie's death left Joseph unable to forgive, "Yes, did you ever consider it? All you thought about was indulging Nathan. Over the years, how many lives has Nathan ruined?"

Cassie was right.

In his eyes, the lives of others seemed insignificant compared to Megan.

Time and time again, Joseph had compromised his own principles and moral standards for Megan.

"Joseph, if you need to blame someone, blame me. This is my fault," Megan collapsed to the ground, weeping uncontrollably, "I never wanted it to end like this."

"Leave, I need some time alone to collect myself," Joseph didn't even glance at Megan as he climbed into his car and drove away.
