Chapter 1393 Megan Appears

In the car.

Bernice kicked back in the leather seat, eyes shut tight. That chat with Lucas? Ugh, it left her feeling totally grossed out.

"He told me to get lost. Bet he's fuming right now," Bernice thought to herself.

But Bernice knew Lucas wouldn't lose any sleep over her past death. That guy was ice-cold and heartless.

The Nina who once tiptoed around that relationship? Probably just dirt under his shoes now.

To her, Lucas and Megan were both on her hit list.

Lucas was just too powerful, and she knew she couldn't take him down with her current skills. But giving up? Not a chance.

Suddenly, her phone buzzed. She picked it up.

"Ms. Ramsey, Megan's been spotted."

Bernice shot up. "Where?"

"At the airport," the voice on the other end said, sounding bummed. "But she used a decoy and slipped away."

Bernice's face scrunched up in frustration.

Right now, Cassie and Joseph's crew were probably hunting for Megan too. Megan being cautious made sense. But this confirmed Megan had indeed skipped town earlier. With David's fall, she should've been hiding. So, what's she up to now?

Bernice's mind raced.

She had a gut feeling Megan had a plan.

"Do whatever it takes, find her ASAP."

"Might take a bit," the voice said. "The decoy we caught seemed hypnotized. She only remembered seeing Megan at an airport abroad and then waking up at Whisperlyn City airport, wearing clothes like Megan's."

"That's freaky," Bernice said, a chill running down her spine.

Just like when Esmeralda met Megan years ago and then mysteriously died in a bathroom fall.

Looked like Megan had gotten even better at her dark arts over the years.

"Yeah, who knows where she picked up all these creepy tricks."

"Get moving."

Fuming with frustration, Bernice swore this time, Megan was going down for good.

Nighttime.

A celebration bash was going down at a swanky five-star hotel.

The crowd? Company folks and a bunch of partners. Even Julia and Aaron made an appearance.

As soon as they walked in, they got mobbed by a bunch of big shots.

Especially Julia, the elusive president of the Jude Group.

Derek was the last to roll in, and man, did he cause a scene.

"Didn't think Derek would show. Looks like Laura, the President's Goddaughter, is pretty important to him."

"Yeah, I thought Derek and Laura might not vibe, but they seem tight."

"We should team up with Laura more. Making less cash is cool, but we can't afford to tick her off."

The guests whispered among themselves.

Laura caught wind of it and walked over to Derek, feeling all warm and fuzzy. "You didn't have to come; it's just a little party."

"It's different. I gotta back you up," Derek said with a warm smile, his eyes full of affection.

Michael was feeling extra annoyed and instinctively wrapped his arm around Laura's waist, staking his claim. "No need. I got her."

Derek glanced at Michael's hand on her waist and shot Laura a smile. "I'll always have your back. Even if Michael gives you trouble, I won't let him off easy."

Laura felt a wave of emotion.

Michael snapped, "Derek, cut the crap. Why would I mess with her? She's my wife; I can't love her enough."

"Who knows," Derek smirked, raising an eyebrow.

"Do you even know how to talk? If not, just zip it," Michael shot back, full of disdain.

"I think you're the one who needs a lesson in talking," Laura glared at him. "Derek came to congratulate us, and you're always picking on him. Just go away."

"You want me to go away?" Michael was shocked, hurt, and disappointed. "I'm your husband."

"He's my brother."

"Just not by blood."

"I consider him family," Laura said firmly.

Michael was fuming, especially seeing Derek's smug face. "Did you hear that? Just family. I'm her lover."

"What are you talking about? I never wanted to be her lover," Derek said, all innocent. "Can you stop being so dirty-minded?"

"You're sick," Laura agreed, glaring at Michael before pulling Derek away.

Left behind, Michael was boiling. Derek was like a sly fox, always playing innocent while being a predator. Shameless.

No way was Michael letting Derek be alone with Laura for too long.

Luckily, Derek's special status soon drew others who came to toast Laura.

"Laura, congrats. This must be Derek. So young and promising. It's an honor to meet you both. Let me toast you."

"My wife can't drink. I'll drink for her," Michael quickly grabbed Laura's glass.

Laura, thinking about breastfeeding later, let him.

"Michael really dotes on his wife," the person said with a smile.

"Of course. She wanted to start her own business, and I backed her all the way. Laura's got talent. Working as a formula specialist for another company would be a waste," Michael praised her endlessly.

Laura gave him a complicated look, while Derek sipped his wine with a smile.

Michael stepped in and drank for Laura whenever the next guests came to toast.

Even though Michael could hold his liquor, he was hammered by the end.

After the banquet, Derek and Aaron helped get Michael into the car.

"Laura, you sure you don't need help getting Michael home?" Aaron asked, concerned.

"No need," Laura smiled. "You guys go home and rest. If I really can't manage, I'll ask the security guard for help."

"Drive safe," Derek reminded, watching the car drive away.

Aaron sighed, "Never thought I'd see the day Michael finally cherishes someone. It's good; otherwise, the family would always worry."

"Yeah." Derek watched the car disappear into the distance.

Even though Derek had feelings for Laura, he knew their situation made it tough for them to be together. This was for the best; at least she was happy.

But Derek wasn't kidding tonight. If Michael ever messed with Laura, Derek wouldn't go easy on him.
