Chapter 1113 You're Bound To Win This Case
"You sure know a lot," Joseph said coldly.
Nathan was scared. "If I help you in court, you have to promise me one thing: get Lucas to protect me. I don't want to be kidnapped again."
Nathan didn't find Joseph as intimidating anymore, but he knew Joseph and Lucas were tight, and Lucas could protect him.
"Kidnapped?" Joseph was surprised.
"Yeah, Megan. She thinks I'm always causing her trouble and wants me dead," Nathan said angrily. "I've been locked in a dark cellar for a month, living a nightmare. A masked woman would come in to torture me. She even tried to kill me. I escaped, but I'm still hurt."
"Alright, I'll get someone to protect you. Stay low and don't let Megan find out," Joseph said quickly.
"Okay, Mr. Hernandez, my life is in your hands," Nathan replied, desperate.
Joseph hung up the phone.
In the private room, Cassie flipped a piece of barbecue, releasing a delicious aroma. "Nathan called you and said Megan wants to kill him?"
"Yeah," Joseph said, still puzzled. "He seemed really scared."
"If he came to you, it must be serious," Cassie said, curious. "It's odd, though. Given how ruthless Megan is, how did Nathan get a chance to escape?"
"That's what I thought too," Joseph said thoughtfully. "Do you think someone kidnapped Nathan to frame Megan and turn them against each other?"
"Could be," Cassie shrugged. "They've made a lot of enemies. Looks like you got lucky, Mr. Hernandez. You're bound to win this case."
"Not necessarily. Even without Nathan, I could still win. It would just take more time." Joseph handed her a piece of barbecue. "Cassie, you have to believe me. I'm the best lawyer in Madison."
"Sure, you lost to the lawyer I hired for two thousand dollars," Cassie teased.
"I could have won, but I realized I misunderstood you and didn't want to continue," Joseph explained, feeling a bit guilty.
Cassie went quiet. Although it was over, Spencer's missing finger still bothered her.
The room fell silent. Joseph gripped his fork tightly. "Cassie, I want to make it up to Spencer. What should I do?"
"He's content with his life now. He doesn't need anything," Cassie interrupted, changing the subject. "Let's eat."
The atmosphere turned cold. No matter what Joseph said, Cassie wasn't very responsive.
As Spencer's boss, she couldn't protect him and even got back together with the person who cut off his finger. Cassie was quite annoyed with herself.
Joseph watched her silently. He knew they had reconciled, but some wounds never heal.
When Joseph cut off Spencer's finger, Cassie had said it wouldn't grow back. But Joseph did it anyway.
Even though Megan manipulated him, Joseph couldn't dodge responsibility.
At the Hernandez Villa, Joseph stayed up late.
He stood by the window for a long time, then finally picked up a knife and chopped off one of his own fingers.
In the middle of the night, Lucas got an emergency call and rushed to the hospital.
The doctor had already bandaged Joseph's wound. Lucas looked at his missing finger, his eyes darkening. "Joseph, are you out of your mind?"
"It's just a finger, not a whole hand," Joseph said, his pale lips twitching. "This way, it's settled. No one owes anyone anything, and there will be no more barriers between Cassie and me."
"You're crazy," Lucas cursed. "That's why I hate love. You and Michael are both nuts. One's still in the hospital, and now you've cut off your finger."
"Lucas, you don't understand. Love can hurt, but when it's sweet, it's sweeter than making millions from a major surgery."
Joseph smiled faintly. "If a finger can buy a complete relationship, it's worth it. Besides, I don't like owing people. I said I'd repay Spencer, and I keep my word."
Lucas was speechless.
He sat by the bed, feeling a bit dazed. "Joseph, do you believe the dead can come into dreams to entrust things?"
Joseph was stunned. "I don't know. What's up?"
Lucas briefly recounted his encounter with Bernice. "If this isn't real, how would Bernice know Esmeralda's ashes weren't human? She even took William's ashes somewhere else."
Joseph was slightly shocked. After a moment, he said, "The world is full of wonders. But if Nina is really dead, maybe what Bernice said is true."
"You think Nina's dead too?" Lucas was stunned, his mind flashing back to Nina's shy look that year.
He didn't know why he remembered it so clearly. Maybe because it was his first time.
No one knew about this, not even Nina, Joseph, or Michael.
"Could she have survived?" Joseph looked at him strangely. "Why bring her up now? Don't tell me you've realized you like her."
"Maybe I feel her death is related to me," Lucas said. "After Megan's true nature was revealed, I increasingly believe what Cassie said was true. Nina didn't harm Joyce, but I hired a lawyer to send her to prison. Her imprisonment led to the Zenith family's downfall."
"If you put it that way, I have some responsibility too," Joseph said, feeling uneasy.
"Forget it. Don't overthink it," Lucas said, standing up. "I'll call Cassie over."
"No need. It's late. I don't want to disturb her," Joseph refused outright.
Lucas was speechless, thinking, 'Your hand is injured, but you're afraid of disturbing Cassie!'
At ten in the morning, Joseph contacted Spencer after leaving the hospital. When Spencer arrived, Joseph handed him a severed finger.
