Chapter 1422 I Should Step Aside

Megan's situation was pretty rough, no doubt about it.

But Derek kept his mouth shut. He figured Laura needed to hash things out with Michael on her own.

So, Laura hit up the law firm before heading back to the villa.

The moment she walked in, she spotted Michael's car in the yard.

As she stepped out, Michael came rushing out of the house, looking all kinds of worried. "Where have you been? I've been calling you all afternoon, and you didn't pick up."

Laura kept quiet. She knew if she started talking, she'd get so mad she might just lose it and do something crazy.

Even with Benjamin, she never got this riled up.

Maybe it was because she and Benjamin weren't married and didn't have a kid. Plus, the other woman wasn't Megan.

In this life, the people Laura despised the most were Megan and Nathan. Olivia? She just found her annoying.

Laura and Olivia didn't have much beef.

"Say something." Michael grabbed her arm, staring at her cold face, and awkwardly licked his lips. "I didn't mean to lie to you. I wanted to wait a couple of weeks to see if what Megan said was true, then send her abroad. I'm over her. I hid it from you because I didn't want you to get the wrong idea, like now. But you went too far, putting a tracker on my phone. Let's just call it even and move on, okay? Megan will be out of Whisperlyn City in a couple of weeks."

Laura sneered.

Megan had the nerve to come back; she wasn't going anywhere without a fight.

And what did he mean by "call it even"?

To him, this was probably no big deal.

If Laura made a fuss, Michael would think she was being petty.

But Laura didn't argue; she just asked, "Do you really believe what Megan said?"

Michael pouted, "I didn't want to, but I asked Joseph. He said he's starting to remember stuff. You saw him leave this morning, so he must believe it too."

Laura felt drained, "So, you don't care that she once treated you like a backup and cheated on you? She's just a slut who sleeps around."

"Laura, shut up." Michael found her words too harsh and instinctively stopped her, looking cold and angry.

Laura went silent.

She realized she couldn't even badmouth Megan without Michael getting mad at her.

It wasn't always like this; he used to treat Laura like she was everything.

The difference was too much for Laura to handle.

Michael didn't notice, only saying, "Laura, you can't talk about Megan like that. It's not fair to her. Back then, I was okay with being her backup. Later, she didn't sleep with anyone else; it was all a show she and Jacob put on."

"Her goal was to make me leave her and go back to the Jude Family. During that time, my career was tanking, and my friends were ditching me. She saw me down and did that."

"She wanted me to have a better life and didn't want to drag me down. She never teamed up with David; he forced her into it."

"I owe her big time."

"But I know we're married. I never planned on betraying you."

"So, I decided to send her abroad in a couple of weeks, but you can't badmouth her anymore. She gave up too much for me."

After he finished talking, Laura thought, 'Lucas nailed it.'

Megan was definitely a top-tier manipulator.

How could she compete with Megan?

Look at how much Michael is defending Megan now, how much he feels for her, and how guilty he is.

When a guy feels guilty towards a woman, it's only a matter of time before things go south.

"Do you believe everything she said?" Laura asked softly.

"I didn't at first, but I checked it out and met Jacob. Jacob said Megan had him put on an act."

Michael pursed his lips, "Besides, I've known her for over ten years and treated her well. She had no reason to curse me so harshly back then. She just wanted me to hate her. She had good intentions."

Laura responded, "Then she really had good intentions. I'm touched. Maybe I should step aside and let you two be together. I thought about it; she sacrificed so much for you. If I keep holding onto the position of your wife, I'll be tormented by guilt."

Michael was stunned. He looked at her seriously.

He suspected she was being sarcastic, but she seemed so sincere.

He was silent for a while, then hesitantly asked, "Are you serious or being sarcastic?"

"I'm serious." Laura almost laughed in anger, "You two have the most touching love story ever. I should leave quickly. Every moment I stay, my conscience will be uneasy. I wish you two a lifetime of happiness."

This time, even if Michael was slow on the uptake, he could sense the sarcasm in her tone.

His face flushed with anger, "Why are you mocking me? I'm telling the truth. I will send her away."

Laura snapped, "She sacrificed so much for you, and you still want to send her away? At this point, you should keep her and make it up to her. If it weren't for her, you wouldn't have returned to the Jude Family or gotten the big project. You owe her too much; you probably can only marry her to make it up to her."

Michael was furious, "You're being unreasonable."

Laura laughed, "Isn't that what you think?"

"Of course not."

"Alright, you keep saying you'll send her away. You won't send her away without money, right? You should give her a large sum of money and arrange a mansion and a job for her abroad, right?"

She stared at him, and Michael stammered, "She has nothing. I can only arrange everything for her so I can spend time with you and Maeve."

Laura said sarcastically, "As far as I know, we are married. Your money is also joint property. Giving her a house and money is also joint property, right?"

Michael was annoyed, "Don't worry; I'll give her my premarital property. Is that okay?"

"That's fine." Laura nodded.
