Chapter 1774 Pretend to Date Me

Milan spun the gun in his hand before smoothly sliding it back into his holster. His eyes were sharp and determined. "I just saw a woman getting bullied in Whisperlyn City. She asked for my help, and as a security officer for the President, I couldn't just ignore it. Does Mr. Nelson think that by helping her, I'm going against the Nelson Group? Or does he believe he's above the law?"

Lucas hesitated, not expecting Milan to be so bold.

Lucas narrowed his eyes, clearly annoyed. "Bernice not only disrespected me but also hurt my foot. Shouldn't I hold her accountable?" He lifted his bleeding foot. "Since you're all about justice, who's gonna answer for my injury?"

"You tried to strangle me first."

Bernice's voice was raspy as she showed the red marks on her neck. "You almost killed me. I hurt your foot in self-defense. Just because you're the CEO of the Nelson Group, does that mean you can decide who lives and dies? If I hadn't been lucky today, I might've died in your villa."

Seeing the marks on her neck, Milan's expression hardened. "Mr. Nelson, how impressive. I didn't know the powerful could kill at will."

Lucas's face twisted with anger. "I'm in a wheelchair; how could I strangle her? She insulted me."

"Either way, I'm reporting this to the police. I need professionals to assess my injuries," Bernice said, pulling out her phone and dialing the police.

Lucas glared at her. "Fine, Bernice, you've really pissed me off. You'll pay for this."

After his harsh warning, he told his bodyguard, "Take me to the hospital."

If he didn't treat his foot soon, it would be ruined.

Once Lucas left in his car, Milan turned back to Bernice, looking at her with a mix of helplessness and concern. "You were too reckless this time. Did you think about what would happen if I wasn't in Whisperlyn City? Lucas isn't as simple as he seems."

"I just couldn't take it anymore."

A deep sense of disgust flashed in Bernice's eyes. She couldn't forget the humiliation and contempt she endured while staying by Lucas's side.

Why should he treat her so horribly after forcing her to stay with him through vile means?

She hated Lucas's condescending attitude.

She just wanted to make him lose control, to make him furious.

"Don't worry. I called you because I knew you'd come. If you weren't in Whisperlyn City, I wouldn't have done this."

Bernice looked at him gratefully. "Milan, thank you. But Lucas is petty. Will helping me cause trouble for you?"

Milan ruffled her hair. "I fought my way up from the battlefield with my own fists. Unless I mess up, Lucas can't touch me. I'm just worried about you. I can't protect you all the time. Why don't you pretend to date me? That way, Lucas wouldn't dare to be too arrogant."

"Don't joke around."Bernice took a step back, her cold eyes filled with complexity. "I told you, I'm a celebrity, and you're a security officer in the shadows. If you date a public figure, what will people say about you online?"

"I don't care about that," Milan said with a sigh. "At worst, I'll stop working for the President."

"Milan, Lucas was right about one thing. You worked your way up from the bottom. Don't let your scars be in vain."

Bernice turned her back to him. "Remember when we watched TV together as kids? You told me you wanted to be a great general. You have ambition and aspirations. As for me, I'm someone who has died once. Even though I've avenged myself, all my loved ones are gone. I can't find a reason for my existence."

"Nina, don't be like this."

Milan felt a pang of fear hearing her empty and confused voice. "There are still many things in life. Don't forget Bernice's family. Since you became Bernice, you need to take care of her family. Your loved ones may be gone, but you can still get married and have children. Your husband and children will be your family."

Of course, if she was willing, he was always ready to be her husband.

But he feared scaring her away, even making her distance herself from him.

"Others have said the same thing, but my heart is numb. I don't know how to love someone," Bernice shook her head. "I've lost the instinct to love."

Milan's heart ached slightly.

How much pain must one endure to become like this?

"It's okay, Nina."

He took long strides towards her and gently patted her head.

Despite his sharp edges, he was incredibly gentle at this moment. "Take it slow, don't rush. Maybe in your past life, you loved too hard. In this life, if you don't know how to love, let those who cherish you love you slowly."

He believed that one day, her heart would slowly open.

He wasn't in a hurry.

No one knew how lost Milan felt when he saw Nina follow Esmeralda to Whisperlyn City to become a socialite.

They had grown up together.

Nina became a socialite, while he and Bernice had to continue living in a small town.

At that time, he told himself he had to work hard to become someone worthy of being Nina's friend.

But he wasn't good at studying, so he joined the army.

After countless battles, he finally stood out.

But Nina had become a prisoner, and she died without even leaving a body.

Fortunately, God gave him another chance.

He had long realized that his years of pursuit were not about being her friend. He wanted to stand by her side as her important husband.

"Nina, do you remember the cartoon we watched together as kids? I said I wanted to be a knight. I always have because a knight can protect those he wants to guard."

Even if the princess ends up with the prince, the knight will always be alone, and that's okay.

Bernice looked up at him in confusion. Milan's bronze skin glowed in the sunset, making him look like a real knight.

Her heart was inexplicably touched.

If only Nina and Esmeralda had never come to Whisperlyn City, never met the Zenith family, never encountered Megan and Lucas.
