Chapter 15 A best friend's betrayal
At 10:00 AM, Cassie groggily woke up on the sofa.
After moving in last night, she found the room quite dirty. Being a clean freak, she made do with the sofa for the night.
Just as she was about to freshen up, Laura called, "Sweetie, aren't you living with Joseph? Why did you stay at a budget hotel last night?"
"How did you know?"
"Our high school group chat is buzzing," Laura said irritably. "That bitch Charlotte said Olivia is back and that you got kicked out by the Brooks family. Everyone who used to envy you is now laughing at you."
Cassie responded with a sigh.
Charlotte Jones was also a socialite from Silverwood and a former classmate. She had always been jealous of Cassie's looks and good grades, so they never got along. It was no surprise that she was kicking Cassie while she was down.
"Aren't you angry?" Laura said, annoyed. "What's going on with you? You never stayed in anything less than a five-star hotel."
"I have no choice. My dad cut off my card. I don't have much money, and Joseph kicked me out last night."
"Why didn't you call me?"
"It was too late. I didn't want to disturb you."
"Cassie, you're such an idiot. Tell me your address."
Forty minutes later, Laura arrived in a hurry. She took one look at the small, shabby room and felt heartbroken. "Come on, let's go. You can stay with me."
"No, you have a boyfriend. I plan to rent a place," Cassie said, shaking her head.
Laura thought for a moment and agreed. "Alright, Arthur came looking for you at my place again yesterday."
Hearing that name made Cassie's throat tighten. Thinking about what he said yesterday made her heart ache.
"I don't want to see him right now."
"Me neither," Laura nodded, puzzled. "By the way, you're married now. Why did Joseph kick you out in the middle of the night?"
Cassie gave a bitter smile and briefly explained what happened last night.
Laura felt deep sympathy for Cassie. "Is he crazy? Are you less important than a cat?"
Cassie replied, "Isn't that obvious?"
"Why did you insist on marrying him in the first place?"
Cassie fell silent. She regretted it too.
Laura sighed. "Alright, let's go eat first. I know a good place. After we eat, we'll look for a place to rent. Oh, let's call Sarah too."
On the way to the restaurant, Cassie called Sarah Sullivan.
Sarah was also her friend, but she was an artist and usually very busy, so Cassie hadn't bothered her after everything happened.
The phone rang a few times before Sarah answered, "Cassie, what's up?"
"Laura and I are going to eat. We haven't seen you in a while. Want to join us?"
"I'm shooting a magazine right now, no time. Sorry."
"No problem, we'll catch up another time."
After ending the call, Laura sighed. "She's getting more and more popular. But if it weren't for you writing songs for her back then, she wouldn't be where she is today."
"We're friends. Helping each other is normal."
Citrus Diner was a new place in Silverwood. A row of luxury cars was parked outside, indicating it was a spot for the truly wealthy.
Cassie and Laura parked and walked in. As they entered the courtyard, they saw some familiar faces inside, including Olivia, Charlotte, and...
