Chapter 1018 Was The Child Actually Cassie's?
Cassie started crying.
Joseph panicked, his heart aching. "Don't cry. I wasn't trying to bully you. I just wanted to kiss you. If you don't want to, I won't."
By the end, his voice sounded a bit hurt.
Cassie took the chance to push him away, putting some distance between them.
Joseph sat up and clumsily buttoned his shirt with one hand.
Cassie didn't want to be teased anymore, so she turned and left.
She sat at her desk, opened her computer, and stared at the report on the screen, unable to read a single word.
Joseph's scent still lingered on her lips, making her feel burdened. But she couldn't deny she didn't resist his kiss.
In contrast, every time David got close, she felt uncomfortable all over.
The more she thought about it, the heavier her heart felt.
Before long, Joseph came out.
Cassie pretended to be busy with work, acting like she was ignoring him.
She realized that whenever Joseph spoke now, he could manipulate her, keeping her in a passive state.
Until a birth control pill, which she had seen just last night, was placed in front of her. Cassie felt a sharp pain in her chest from anger. "Joseph, do you have to come over every day and force me to take this? You forgot I took one just yesterday. Taking too many birth control pills is bad for my health."
Joseph's arm stiffened, and after a moment, he said with a complex expression, "Who knows if David will sleep with you tonight."
Cassie closed her laptop and, after a half-minute of silence, gritted her teeth and said, "You just don't want me to have David's child, right? You don't need to give me these pills because I already have his child."
Joseph's body trembled, and he laughed. "Cassie, don't lie to me."
"I'm not lying to you," Cassie stood up abruptly and said resolutely. "David and I already have a child over two years old. It happened when I was in Austin. We slept together when we were drunken."
She couldn't keep entangling with Joseph like this. Although last night made her realize she might still have feelings for Joseph, she really couldn't betray David anymore.
Joseph stared at her blankly, his handsome face gradually turning gloomy. His hand, hanging by his side, slowly clenched, but his thin lips stubbornly maintained a smile. "Cassie, do you think I'll believe you? Since you have a child with him, where is the child?"
"After I returned to the country, I wanted to seduce you and take revenge on you, so I didn't bring Oliver with me." Cassie bit her lip. In fact, she had thought of this excuse when she returned from Austin. It could logically cover up Oliver's parentage and also hurt Joseph.
After going through many things, she gave up on using this excuse and also gave up on the idea of revenge against Joseph.
Now, bringing it up again, she just wanted him to give up completely.
"I don't believe you." Joseph shook his head, even though his heart was overwhelmed with fear. He denied it, "If you already have David's child, why did you come to seduce me and sleep with me? Would David agree to that?"
"He had to agree to my plan because Oliver's birth was an accident." Cassie turned away, avoiding his almost wild eyes. "I originally planned to tell you the truth when you fell deeply in love with me, as revenge. But I gave up on that. Actually, Oliver has always been with me, raised by my dad. You may not believe it, but when you see Oliver, you'll know."
A flash of memory hit Joseph. He remembered seeing Oliver at the kindergarten.
The first time he saw Oliver, he thought the kid looked like Cassie. But later, he heard Oliver was supposedly Cole's child.
Could Oliver actually be Cassie's son?
"Is Oliver in the same kindergarten as Sophia?" He forced out the words.
Cassie deliberately looked surprised. "How do you know?"
Joseph's mind went blank, and his heart felt like it was tearing apart.
He thought the worst pain was knowing she married another man, but now she also had a child with David, over two years old.
"No, tell me this isn't true. You're lying to me." He rushed over like a madman, grabbing Cassie's shoulders and shaking her violently, tears streaming down his face. "Even if that child is yours, it's mine too, right? I know it. You must have lied to me three years ago. Our child didn't die. That child is mine."
Cassie's heart trembled at his shouting.
Seeing Joseph actually cry twisted her heart in pain.
After a long time, she forced a cold sneer. "You forgot. Our child was lost because of you. Do you remember how much blood I lost that day?"
Joseph was stunned.
His whole arm trembled, but his body seemed frozen.
He thought, 'Yes, what am I saying? My child was gone three years ago. I missed it. I didn't cherish it, so she had a child with another man.'
As tears streamed down his face, Joseph finally understood what heartbreak and despair felt like.
He had finally found a glimmer of hope, only for it to be ruthlessly shattered by her.
Cassie watched the light in his eyes gradually extinguish, and she slowly lowered her head.
"That's it, Joseph. Please don't come looking for me anymore. Don't have any more interactions with me." She was very afraid that if she continued to entangle with him, she would end up in a situation where everyone despised her.
Now, she didn't want to hurt David, so she could only choose to hurt him.
In the end, Joseph left.
He stumbled out of her office.
Cassie stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, staring blankly outside.
Coco came in. "Mrs. Brooks, Mr. Hernandez has left. He looked devastated when he left..."
He was actually very curious about what Cassie had done to torment Joseph like that.
"I know. You can go back to work," Cassie said weakly.
Joseph drove all the way to the kindergarten.
It was nap time, and the guard didn't let him in.
He stood under the scorching sun until Nathaniel called, "Mr. Hernandez, where are you? Didn't you say you had a meeting with the chairman of the Garrison Group at three this afternoon?"
"Nathaniel, tell me, did you bribe the hospital's doctor three years ago? Cassie didn't actually have a miscarriage, did she?" Joseph's hollow voice echoed.
