Chapter 1462 Bernice, Stop!
Lucas rolled up the car window, checked the time, and said, "Megan's been missing all night. Michael's freaking out. It's seven-thirty in the morning now. I bet he'll find Bernice's spot in less than an hour."
Laura's face went pale. "Michael cares so much about Megan. What if something bad happens to her?"
"Bernice's life will be over," Lucas replied coldly. "A whole night is plenty of time for Bernice to do a lot of damage. Megan's probably already hurt. The only way to keep Bernice safe is for you to take the fall for her."
Laura was shocked into silence but quickly pulled herself together.
Lucas went on, "First, you have a motive. Second, Michael owes you and the kid. Only you can avoid getting thrown in jail by him. Plus, you have Derek's family backing you. You can walk away clean."
Laura, her mind racing, tugged at her hair. "Mr. Nelson, you really overestimate me. To Michael, I'm nothing compared to Megan. He might kill me."
"No, he won't. I'm his friend, and I know him well. He likes you, but Megan's always been a big problem for him."
Lucas fiddled with his lighter and, seeing Laura's trembling lips and panic, said calmly, "It's your call. I'm not forcing you. I can't reach Bernice right now, and even if I could, if Michael can't find who took Megan, he'll keep digging. If I figured out it's Bernice, it's only a matter of time before Michael does too. Only if you step in and take the blame will he stop suspecting and investigating. It's up to you to decide if Bernice is worth it."
Worth it or not?
Laura was scared. She hadn't known Bernice for long, but she genuinely considered her a good friend, and Bernice did this for Nina.
Laura felt she should help out of both emotion and reason.
"Of course, I'm willing to help," Laura said, turning sharply to Lucas. "But Mr. Nelson, if you step in, you can protect Bernice."
"I can protect her, but Bernice isn't worth me breaking ties with Michael over." Lucas shrugged, his handsome face looking particularly indifferent. "Things will get very complicated afterward."
"I understand. Mr. Nelson, you always love yourself the most. That's how businessmen are—they're most afraid of losing out," Laura said angrily. Lucas probably just wanted to sleep with Bernice. Laura should be grateful that he even came to inform her today.
Lucas was noncommittal. "It's up to you. If you agree, I'll take you there now. It will benefit you too. After this, Michael will definitely divorce you."
"Okay." Laura nodded. No matter what, she couldn't watch Bernice get into trouble. "Take me there. Do you know where Bernice is now?"
"I have a rough idea, but my guys need to confirm the exact location. Let's go first and try to get there before Michael."
Lucas started the car and floored the gas pedal.
Halfway there, his people had already found a suspicious factory.
At the same time, the hospital folks reported, "Mr. Nelson, Michael's tracked down the car that took Megan last night. He's heading your way. He'll be there soon."
"Got it." Lucas floored the gas pedal.
Laura, worried sick about Bernice, didn't stop him. She just clung to the car's overhead handle, feeling queasy.
Laura never realized that behind Lucas's polished exterior, he could drive like a maniac. Watching his slick moves, she could almost believe he used to race cars.
Inside the factory, Megan was barely hanging on, lying on the ground like a corpse, surrounded by blood.
Megan had only one thought now: death would be a relief.
"Please, kill me," Megan pleaded in pain and despair.
At this moment, Megan regretted everything. She shouldn't have come back after escaping from Madison.
After a night of torture, Megan couldn't hold on any longer. Her vision went black, and she finally passed out.
Bernice checked the time. It should be daylight outside.
She couldn't delay any longer. Although she wanted to keep torturing Megan slowly, she knew Michael would soon be here.
It didn't matter if she got caught; she was ready for the worst.
But Megan had to die.
Bernice pulled out a knife she had prepared for a long time. The blade's glint reflected in her eyes, which were fierce and slightly red behind the mask.
If she could, Bernice wouldn't have wanted it to come to this, but she couldn't tolerate Megan continuing to roam free. Some grudges, Bernice had to settle herself.
Bernice closed her eyes, and the knife in her hand was about to fall.
With a bang, the iron door outside was kicked open.
Lucas and Laura, who rushed in, were both horrified by the scene in the basement.
Especially Laura, who couldn't believe that the woman in the terrifying mask was the dazzling star Bernice she admired.
"Bernice, stop!" Laura rushed over.
Bernice's hands were trembling. She hadn't expected Lucas and Laura to arrive first. Laura was her best friend, and even with the mask, Laura recognized her.
She didn't want Laura to see her like this. Her parents were dead, her only living siblings were malicious.
Taking advantage of Bernice's distraction, Laura quickly snatched the knife from her hand and then saw Megan lying on the ground, stunned.
Was this still Megan? She was covered in filth from head to toe, dirty and messy, with disgusting maggots crawling on her head.
But the most shocking thing was that Megan's hands and feet were covered in blood.
While Laura was in a daze, Bernice snapped back to reality and tried to grab the knife.
"Bernice, stop." Lucas intervened this time, restraining her wrist. He pulled off the mask, revealing Bernice's delicate but cold face.
Bernice's gaze made Lucas's heart tremble. He had never seen a woman's eyes so cold, like a demon from hell.
"Bernice, it's really you." Laura's last bit of hope vanished. But she wasn't angry; this version of Bernice made her heart ache even more.
