Chapter 593
Two days had passed. Cassie had barely set foot on the tarmac when a figure of handsome refinement approached her without hesitation. " Cassie, welcome back to the country," David greeted, his smile warm and welcoming. He stepped forward, offering to assist with her luggage. "Didn't you bring Oliver and Sophia back with you?"
"I left them in Laura's care, David," Cassie replied, her tone matter-of-fact.
"The house renovation is complete. I'll take you there now," David assured her, guiding Cassie towards the waiting car.
Once settled within the vehicle, the car radio hummed with the latest domestic news. "According to reliable sources, Madison's wealthiest man, Joseph, has spent a staggering three billion dollars to customize a wedding gown for his girlfriend. Rumor has it that Joseph devoted two years to the creation of this gown. The couple has been together for nearly four years, and it appears their long-awaited day of bliss is finally on the horizon."
David cast a quick glance at Cassie, his expression relaxing when he noted her calm demeanor. "I heard about this news as well. It seems Joseph is indeed preparing to tie the knot."
"That's good," Cassie responded, her voice laced with indifference. Ever since her commitment to a mental institution, she had relinquished all hope for Joseph. "I assumed they would have married long ago."
"They've been cohabitating for some time, even without the formality of marriage," David revealed.
Cassie offered a faint smile. "That's to be expected." She knew well that the two had been living together since her divorce, and even more so after her supposed death. They must be relishing their time together. David caught the fleeting expression on Cassie's face, opened his mouth to speak, but then thought better of it.
An hour later, the car pulled into the upscale neighborhood of Willow Creek Estates. The apartment David had purchased for Cassie was located on the eighth floor, boasting four bedrooms and two living rooms. It featured a spacious balcony and two children's rooms. The boy's room was predominantly sky blue, with Spider-Man themed bed sheets, a nod to Oliver's favorite superhero. The girl's room was a sea of pink, filled with an array of dolls.
Cassie was momentarily taken aback.
David, his voice gentle, explained, "I thought Oliver and Sophia shouldn't stay abroad indefinitely. You'd bring them back sooner or later. I decorated the house according to their preferences. The neighborhood has a kindergarten, and the facilities are top-notch. Willow Creek Estates is also conveniently located near elementary, middle, and high schools, all of which are among New York's finest."
Cassie remained silent for a moment, absorbing David's words. It was impossible for her not to be moved by his thoughtfulness. Three years ago, if it hadn't been for the intervention of David, Liam, and Nathaniel, she might have lost her sanity in that sterile hospital room, subjected to daily injections, and ended up a permanent resident of a mental asylum.
Since moving abroad, David had consistently supported her and her two children. Without him, she wouldn't be where she was today. And now, upon her return to the country, he continued to consider her welfare with such care.
" Cassie, don't overthink it. I chose all of this willingly," David reassured her, his smile gentle. "Ever since I met you in Madison that year, my heart hasn't had room for anyone else. Go and do your thing. I'll be here waiting for you."
"David, I just feel like I'm not deserving of you," Cassie confessed, her apology sincere.
"Is that because of Oliver and Sophia?" David queried, his tone casual. "In my eyes, they are the most adorable little angels I've ever seen. They're never a burden to me. It would be my honor to be their father."
Cassie found herself touched once again. In moments like these, she regretted countless times why she had fallen for Joseph back then, instead of David.
