Chapter 137
""Zip it if you've got no proof,"" Helen snapped back at Cassie with equal ferocity. ""What have you brought to this family but trouble? You got what you deserved. Enjoy some quality time behind bars for reflection!""
Cassie felt the sting of their words chilling her to the bone, recognizing the malice in Helen and Robert's voices.
""Oh, you'll get what's coming to you!"" she hissed back, her eyes blazing. ""You might have shunned and loathed me before, but framing me? That's where you crossed the line. From this day onwards, I swear I will bring down Height Company, piece by piece!""
Olivia Brooks chuckled. ""You think there's a future awaiting you? Anderson family's lawyers are talking at least two decades in jail. Take care of yourself in there; I might pop in for a visit now and then.""
""You all seem pretty sure of my defeat,"" Cassie let out a scornful laugh, focusing on the faces eager to see her locked away.
With an air of arrogance, Alexander said, ""Hope is a nice thing to have, but you seem to have missed a crucial detail. The Andersons hired Madison's top dog, Felix. And you? What about your company...""
His gaze shifted to Walter, and he couldn't help but let out a snort of laughter. ""Ha! Who's this? Some rookie lawyer fresh out of college?""
After his remark, Alexander walked over and prodded Walter's chest tauntingly. ""Hey, buddy, do you even know who you're up against? The Anderson family! Don't ruin your whole career as soon as you step out that door. I'd ditch if I were you.""
Walter simply raised an eyebrow, amused at being mistaken for a greenhorn because of his youthful appearance.
Even Olivia Brooks added with feigned concern, ""No one else would dare take Cassie's case. You must be new to the game, but we're only looking out for you.""
""Looking out for who, exactly?""
A cool voice emerged from behind.
Cassie didn't even need to turn to recognize who it belonged to; the corners of her mouth curling into a subtle smirk, already savoring the thought of their impending embarrassment in the courtroom.
Olivia Brooks, Robert, and the others glanced up.
Unnoticed, the elevator had opened, and a figure emerged.
The man, dressed in a light grey suit with subtle pinstripes, had an imposing and perfectly sculpted stature. His face, dauntingly handsome, was void of emotion, but his eyes, calm and deep like a tranquil abyss, swept across the room, emanating an aura of authority that instinctively commanded both respect and fear.
It was him.
Olivia Brooks recognized him instantly.
He was the same man who had been with Noah Collins at the restaurant before, the one responsible for having her and Charlotte Jones unceremoniously ousted.
She later heard from Charlotte's inquiries that he was just a lawyer.
Could it be Cassie hired him as her attorney? There's no way...
""I didn't even know you were rubbing shoulders with these folks,"" Joseph Hernandez cast a sidelong glance at Walter, his tone indifferent as he started speaking.
""You've got to be kidding,"" Walter said with a respectful chuckle. ""They just assumed I was Miss Brooks' attorney, thinking I'm fresh out of college.""
""Your face does look pretty young,"" Joseph appraised with a glance.
Walter just shrugged and laughed it off resignedly.
Alexander, however, saw things clearly. Accustomed to strutting around Madison with Robert backing him, he'd never really taken Hernandez seriously.
""Oh, I get it now. You're Cassie's lawyer? Geez, man, with looks like that, why bother being a lawyer? You should find yourself a sugar mama. Bet you’d make more money that way.""
A shock of fear flashed through Walter's eyes at the audacity to speak to Hernandez like that."
