Chapter 345

Luna shivered but retorted stubbornly, "Joseph, I won't break up with you. It was you who pursued me in the first place."

"Fine. We'll see how this goes." Joseph brushed her off and got into his car.

Luna watched his car drive away, panic and fear clouding her eyes. Her and Vera's standing in Leo's family rested wholly on the support of the Hernández family. Even Grandpa Chapman was polite to them; she couldn't afford to lose Joseph.

It had to be that temptress whispering in Joseph's ear. She was determined to find her and destroy her.

In the car, Joseph called Cassie. "What're you up to? I'm on my way back."

"I'm still at work, pulling a late shift." Cassie was startled. Wasn't he supposed to go home to his family tonight?

"Still working late?" Joseph sounded displeased. "Wait for me; I'm coming to get you."

Cassie looked at the phone with a hint of resentment in her heart.

She despised how he'd spend time with Luna and then come to see her.

Half an hour later, Joseph's sports car pulled up in front of the office building, and Cassie entered.

A woman's perfume lingered inside the car, a scent she recognized from Luna.

She was positive he had just dropped Luna off at home.

Juggling two women, wasn't he tired?

"Guess what I brought you." Joseph reached back for a basket of strawberries and placed it on her lap. "I picked them myself from the Hernández family orchard. They're sweet."

He looked at her expectantly. It’s the first time he'd ever tried to please a woman in such a way.
Much to his disappointment, Cassie looked down at the strawberry with a muted smile that seemed more obligatory than genuine.

"Thanks." Cassie picked up the conjoined strawberry from the top of the pile.

"Doesn't this berry sort of represent us?" Joseph tightened his grip on her left hand, his handsome features softening with tenderness as her silhouette reflected in his deep eyes.

Hearing the sweetness in his voice, Cassie glanced at him and momentarily lost herself.

The man was too alluring. Even after what he'd done to her, his gentleness towards a woman was still alarmingly irresistible.

Joseph's lips curved up slightly as he leaned in to kiss her. Just as their lips were about to touch, the scent of Luna's perfume inside the car made her instinctively turn her face, and his kiss missed its mark, cooling the previously charged air.

An abrupt irritation surged in Joseph. He thought about the effort he'd put in to handpick the biggest, brightest strawberries from the orchard, hoping she would appreciate them, but he was met with nothing but indifference.

He knew he couldn't blame her. He took a deep breath and lightly touched her head. "This is my own doing. I hurt you. But time will open your heart to me. There's no rush; I've all the time in the world."

Cassie, startled, thought he would erupt in anger again. She was regretting provoking him, a reaction she couldn't afford.

Then Joseph started the car and drove back to their new place.

Rosalind washed the strawberries, and Cassie ate them obediently. They were as sweet and delicious as he had said.

Joseph wrapped his arms around her at bedtime and nipped at her ear, murmuring indulgently, "If you like them, I'll pick some more for you next time."

Trembling slightly in his embrace, Cassie cast her eyes downward and hummed an acknowledgment.
