Chapter 584

"You're such a despicable woman," Cassie muttered under her breath.

Megan, smirking at Cassie's torment, retorted, "Oh, I almost forgot to mention, I also orchestrated the demise of Nina's mother. Regrettably, the police will never find a shred of evidence."

"It was you," Cassie accused, her voice barely a whisper.

Unable to contain her rage, Cassie seized a cup of scalding water from the table and hurled it at Megan. The woman let out a yelp, deftly sidestepping the projectile. It was at this moment that Joseph stormed into the room, his eyes falling on Cassie's reddened arm. His face contorted with fury.

"You crazy woman," he spat, his words laced with venom. "Megan has shown you nothing but kindness, and this is how you repay her? Perhaps a mental institution would be a more suitable place for you."

"I appreciate your concern," Cassie retorted, her voice dripping with sarcasm, "but I'd rather you let her take care of you. I never want to lay eyes on either of you again."

She closed her eyes, fearing that if she had to endure their presence for another moment, she would be consumed by her rage.

"Joseph, based on my years of experience, I believe she may be suffering from depression. Otherwise, she wouldn't be lashing out at us like this. I'm not concerned for my own safety, but I fear her current mental state could pose a threat to others," Megan interjected, feigning concern.

Joseph was taken aback.

Her words served as a reminder of Cassie's recent erratic behavior. First, she had attacked him with a knife, then she had shattered a glass bottle on him. Now, she had attempted to scald Megan with boiling water. Coupled with Megan's credentials as a renowned psychiatrist, Joseph found himself questioning Cassie's mental stability.

"Megan, stop spouting nonsense. I'm not crazy, I'm perfectly sane," Cassie protested.

Sensing Joseph's hesitation, Cassie felt a pang of anxiety. She quickly defended herself, "It's because of you two that I'm like this."

Megan regarded her with a look of feigned sympathy, "It's common for those suffering from depression to deny their illness. Considering your recent miscarriage, I strongly advise you to seek professional help."

Cassie wished she could summon the strength to wipe the smug expression off Megan's face. But she knew that any display of anger would only serve to validate Megan's claims. "Megan, Joseph is yours now. You can even take my place as his wife. Why must you continue to torment me? I beg you both to leave me be. I promise to keep my distance from now on."

Joseph's brow furrowed at her words.

Despite his disdain for Cassie, the thought of her distancing herself from him stirred an inexplicable sense of unease within him.

Megan responded with a bitter smile, "How can I make you understand? You may not realize it now, but if you don't seek help, you'll end up ruining your life. And as Joseph's ex-wife, your actions reflect on him. Have you considered what people might think?"

Joseph's brow twitched at her words.

"Enough," Cassie snapped, "I know my own mind better than anyone. I'm not ill."

Cassie was teetering on the edge, Megan's relentless pressure pushing her closer to a breakdown. "I've already lost my children, I'm already in a state of despair. Do you want to confine me to a mental institution, Joseph? You don't have to love me, but can you at least treat me with some semblance of humanity?"

"We don't intend to institutionalize you, just ensure you're taking your medication regularly," Megan reassured her, her voice sickeningly sweet.

"Enough," Cassie repeated, her voice barely a whisper, "I'm perfectly healthy. I don't need any medication."
