Chapter 1687: Those People Are Not You

"Mom, you guys are too much."

Isadora was so angry that she was in tears.

Unfortunately, her leg was injured, making it inconvenient for her to even leave the house.

After Thalia confiscated Isadora's phone, she went out to play cards.

On the way, Isadora's phone rang. Seeing Elliott's call, Thalia was glad she had the foresight.

She answered the call and said, "Elliott, Isadora is taking a nap. What do you need?"

On the other end, Elliott was silent for a moment before speaking softly, "Thalia, would it be convenient for me to come to the Penrose Family tonight?"

He felt that canceling the engagement was something that should be done in person to be more respectful.

After all, he had previously agreed to it.

Thalia's heart skipped a beat, fearing that Elliott had found out about the Miller Group's troubles and wanted to rush the marriage with Isadora.

She quickly said, "Tonight? Tonight might be a bit inconvenient; our family is going to Isadora's grandmother's house."

"How about tomorrow?"

"Isadora's leg is injured, and she plans to stay there for a few days to spend more time with her grandmother," Thalia said helplessly.

Elliott understood that the Penrose Family had probably heard about the Miller Group's situation and was now trying to avoid them.

Actually, during the previous banquet, he had realized that the Penrose Family parents were quite snobbish. But these days, which wealthy and influential families aren't? The fact that Isadora saved him was undeniable, and as long as Isadora herself was fine, he didn't mind marrying her.

But now, this situation was just right.

"Here's the thing," Elliott said straightforwardly, "The Miller Group is facing some trouble recently, and I'm not sure if we can get through it. I'm afraid I can't go through with the engagement with Isadora. I'm very sorry. As for Isadora's injury from saving me, I'm willing to compensate. A few years ago, I bought two storefronts on Cedar Ridge Road in Whisperlyn City. Consider them my compensation. How does that sound?"

Thalia's eyebrows twitched.

She hadn't expected Elliott to take the initiative to call off the engagement.

For a moment, she was a bit conflicted.

Although the Miller Group was in crisis now, what if they got through it?

But if they didn't, and the Miller Group went under, Elliott could use this as an excuse to entangle them further.

As for the storefronts on Cedar Ridge Road, Thalia was quite surprised.

That area had developed rapidly in recent years. What used to be worth a few million dollars per storefront had now increased to tens of millions of dollars each.

Two storefronts combined would be worth seventy to eighty million dollars, and in a few years, they might appreciate even more.

Isadora's leg injury could be completely healed with just a few hundred thousand dollars. Elliott was being very generous with his offer of several tens of millions of dollars.

If it were the Penrose Family, they might not be willing to give up a few storefronts so easily as compensation.

After considering for half a minute, Thalia agreed, "You are indeed a man of integrity. I truly wanted you to marry Isadora, but I only have one daughter, and I've worked hard to raise her. I don't want her to suffer. I'll agree to this on her behalf."

Thalia didn't refuse the storefronts either.

Elliott politely said, "I'll have my secretary handle the transfer of the storefronts tomorrow."

After resolving this matter, Elliott called his secretary.

Originally, these matters were handled by Isadora, but since she was on leave due to her injury, the responsibilities had been transferred to Giselle Montague.

Giselle was shocked when she heard about it. "Mr. Miller, Isadora did save you, but according to the company's usual compensation for work-related injuries, it would be at most a million dollars. The storefronts on Cedar Ridge Road have a lot of potential for appreciation. Assets worth tens of millions of dollars could be worth hundreds of millions in the future. The Miller Group still has many uncertainties ahead. There's no need to use those storefronts as compensation."

"Isadora is a socialite from the Penrose Family. If we only compensate according to the usual standards, or even a few times more, the Penrose Family might not be satisfied. Even if they agree now, once the Miller Group gets through this crisis, they might use this as an excuse to continue discussing the marriage."

Elliott patiently explained, "The compensation is indeed high, but this way, if the Penrose Family brings up Isadora's injury in the future, I won't owe them anything."

Giselle still felt distressed and complained, "Compensating tens of millions of dollars for a broken leg? If I had known, I would have gone that day. I would have saved you and wouldn't have asked for much compensation, just a few hundred thousand dollars."

Elliott remained indifferent, unable to even muster a smile.

Was Elliott not distressed? He was more distressed than anyone.

But when Isadora was hospitalized, the Penrose Family's attitude made it clear that if he didn't marry Isadora, they wouldn't let it go.

Now, if he didn't offer a substantial compensation, the Penrose Family might not agree to cancel the engagement. They might wait until the Miller Group's situation became clear. If the Miller Group collapsed, the Penrose Family wouldn't acknowledge the engagement. If the Miller Group survived, the Penrose Family wouldn't let it go easily.

If he had known earlier, he would have preferred to be injured by the glass himself. At least he wouldn't have to marry Isadora or be forced into this situation by Julia.

Elliott silently vowed never to let a woman save him again.

The loss was too great.

After all, those two storefronts were originally intended as a wedding gift for Laura.

After resolving this matter, Elliott contacted Julia. However, when the call connected, he didn't speak.

His handsome face looked troubled. He had angrily scolded Julia that day, but now he had to lower his head. It was too humiliating.

"You agreed?"

Fortunately, Julia had guessed it. "Then bring your passport tomorrow morning, and we'll get married."

Elliott was stunned and then frowned. "Are you sure? Do your parents know about this?"

"Do your parents know?" Julia retorted.

Elliott was silent.

If he told Luke and Rose, they definitely wouldn't agree.

Luke and Rose always put their children first, and the company second.

"If our parents find out, they won't agree in the short term," Julia knew this well. She didn't want to spend too much time dealing with their parents' issues initially. Now that Elliott was resisting her, no matter how much effort she put in, it wouldn't work. It was better to tie Elliott to her side first. Once Elliott accepted her, she would be willing to get along with Luke and Rose.

Elliott gritted his teeth, "If you know your parents won't agree, why are you forcing me? There are other men in the world."

"None of them are you." After a moment of silence, Julia's gentle voice came through.

Through the phone, Elliott's cold heart seemed to skip a beat.

He gripped his phone tightly.

Damn it.

He couldn't be easily swayed by Julia like before.

He sneered, "Anyone can say sweet words."

Julia didn't continue to argue, "I'll wait for you at nine tomorrow morning."

With that, Julia hung up the phone.

Elliott's tall figure seemed to be shrouded in a low-pressure atmosphere.
