Chapter 263

""Don't bother. He knows I only got close to him by mistake in the beginning, and that you lied to bail me out of jail."" Cassie stopped her.

""What? How would he know that?"" Laura’s eyes widened in alarm. ""Oh my God, is Joe gonna skin me alive?""

""Yeah, it's supposed to be just between us,"" Cassie said resignedly. ""And you’re reeking of alcohol. Be careful. You tend to spill secrets when you're drunk.""

""Don't you dare accuse—"" Laura started to protest, then a sudden realization hit her, and she yanked at her hair. ""I remember now. Noah brought me home last night. I was plastered, and there was another guy who said he was your boyfriend.""

Cassie felt a familiar frustration bubble up within her.

Laura banged her head in frustration, wishing she could rip her own mouth off.

""Cassie, I am so sorry,"" she said, kneeling down, tears welling up in her eyes. ""I've screwed you over again. I don't know how I can ever make this up to you. I'm too ashamed to face you. What if I set you up with my brother? I swear, I'll make him devote himself to you for life.""

""Let it be."" Cassie waved dismissively, resigning herself from any further comment. ""Even without you in the picture, things with him and me were probably doomed. Joseph's past, and his ex... she's the one he can't seem to shake off. He even calls out her name when he's drunk.""

""Seriously, why do these guys always want the next best thing?"" Laura Miller fumed, her own situation echoing in her mind.

""Oh, didn't you take Benjamin and your family out for dinner last night? What happened? You didn't get stood up again, did you?"" Cassie eyed her with sudden suspicion.

Laura Miller's face soured. ""Isla was in a car accident; he rushed to be with her. Not a single call was made. I broke up with him. I'm done.""

""Damn, what a total jerk!"" Cassie cursed in outrage before letting out a sigh. ""Forget it. You got me divorced, and now you're single too. Stick with me then. Even if Benjamin comes crawling to you, don't you dare take him back.""

""I refuse to stand by. I'm partly to blame for this situation. I'm putting off any thoughts of marriage until you're back on your feet, and if there's a shortage of men, consider me your wingwoman, no strings attached.""

""Scram! Your matchmaking is the last thing I need,"" Cassie shot back, her grief now laced with a wry smile.

The next morning, Cassie woke up with the instinctive thought of preparing breakfast for Joseph.

Stepping out of the bedroom, she paused at the sight of the unfamiliar living room.

She'd forgotten; she was divorced from Joseph.

No more early cooking, no more being annoyed by the watchful eyes of bodyguards.

Yes, she was free.

As the CEO of Peace Group with a net worth of several million dollars, she should have been thrilled. Freedom was hers, yet joy eluded her.

After eating breakfast, Cassie drove to the hospital to check on David. She hadn't seen him since he fell unconscious."
