Chapter 169

"Joseph's face stiffened for a moment.

""What were you about to say?"" Cassie asked, remembering the incomplete thought.

His voice dripped with sarcasm, ""I was thinking how lucky it is that your own spit didn't finish you off.""

Speechless, Cassie couldn't fathom how someone could be so venomous with their words. Yet, her curiosity about the previous night overwhelmed any offense. This villa was his, after all; he must have the answers. ""Last night... Do you know if anyone went into the study and used my computer? Someone completed my drawings for me.""

""Oh, a friend of mine helped you out last night, just to prevent you from keeling over and me needing to find a new chef,"" Joseph said casually, sipping his milk as though talking about the weather. ""But just this once, don't expect it to happen again.""

Cassie was stunned. She recalled that when she went to bed the night before, it was nearly midnight.

He had actually called someone that late to assist her.

Sure, he always claimed he just didn't want to lose his cook, but would any employer really treat their housekeeper so well?

Last time on the construction site, he even got hurt trying to save her. It was a close call; a brick could have hit his head and been deadly.

Her heart began to pound fiercely, the irritation she had felt over his sharp tongue now completely dissipated.

Maybe he was just one of those tough-on-the-outside, warm-on-the-inside kinds of guys.

After a while, she managed to speak, ""Thank you. Your friend is quite skilled. Where do they work? Once the bonus comes through, I'd like to share it with them.""
A hint of teasing laced with charisma spilled from his voice, ""Forget it, he doesn't give a damn about your little commission.""

Cassie shrugged it off, ""Then I'll just have to take him out to dinner to say thanks...""

""You're not in his league,"" Joseph frowned, cutting her off, ""If you want to treat someone, treat me.""

""Deal, when you're back from your trip, dinner's on me,"" Cassie replied without hesitation, knowing full well that any help she got was thanks to Joseph's influence. Gratitude was in order, ""Thanks.""

Joseph looked down, a sly smile on his lips but silent, ""Let me show you something.""

He pulled up a photo on his phone and handed it to her.

Cassie’s face flushed crimson after one glance.

It was a photo of her asleep, drooling.

The picture was painfully mortifying.

Unable to stand it, she reached to grab his phone.

Joseph swiftly withdrew the phone, and as she lunged forward, she tumbled right into his arms, her left hand accidentally landing on a particularly compromising spot on his leg.

She heard him hiss sharply by her ear, embarrassment rooting her to the spot, she spun around to escape.

His right hand quickly snaked around her waist, his breath warm and suggestive by her ear, his voice enticing as a cello, ""Trying to seduce me first thing in the morning, huh?""

""It's a misunderstanding..."" Cassie stammered, looking up to meet his gaze. His eyes, dark and magnetic, captivated hers, making it almost impossible to look away.

Joseph looked down at the flustered woman in his arms, an unfolding flower begging to be kissed.

And kiss her he did.

These nights, to help relieve his pain, Cassie had often used kisses to distract him."
