Chapter 1733 Bernice and Lucas Begin

"Why did you come back down when I just asked you to bring some fruit?" Rose said, feeding Maeve some fruit while giving Laura a stern look.

Laura pouted, "It's better not to disturb them for now."

Rose instantly understood.

If this had happened to someone else's son, she would have thought it was normal. But when it came to Elliott, it just seemed odd.

"I used to think Elliott was just cold-hearted. I worried that any future wife of his wouldn't be able to stand him. Now I see, I didn't understand him at all."

"Mom, men are like this nowadays."

Laura thought of Cassie's husband, Joseph. He was as cold as ice to outsiders but passionate and warm to Cassie in private.

Elliott was probably the same.

As a woman, Laura liked this kind of contrast.

It didn't matter if he was cold to others, as long as he was good to his wife.

But Derek wasn't like that. He was always smiling and kind to everyone.

Thinking about this, Laura felt a bit regretful. When she talked to Derek on the phone that night, she said coldly, "Elliott is such a good man. I bet he's never touched another woman besides Julia, unlike you, being gentle with everyone."

Derek was baffled, "Did you forget how Elliott used to scold Julia? Do you want to try that?"

"I don't." Laura suddenly remembered how Cassie used to be hurt by Joseph's cold words.

Thinking about it, Derek had always been gentle, considerate, and understanding towards her.

She was asking for too much.

Derek explained, "I'm not gentle with everyone. You see, many girls at school have asked me out recently, and I've politely declined them all, not giving them any chance. Everyone handles things differently. I'm the president's son. If I acted like Elliott, always with a cold face, people would say I'm arrogant and conceited."

"That's true." Laura realized she was wrong and quickly changed the subject, "By the way, did you know Elliott and Julia are getting married in Austin next month?"

"So sudden, I hadn't heard." Derek was surprised and then a bit envious, "Look at them, just recently together and already planning a wedding. We're still stuck in the same place."

"Elliott is older than you, isn't he?" Laura retorted with a smile.

Just kidding, she had just escaped from a marriage and didn't want to jump back in so soon.

"Even though I'm not as old as Elliott, it doesn't stop me from wanting a wife." Derek sighed, "Look, another lonely night for me."

"I was just with you yesterday."

"I want you with me every day" Derek whined.

"Dream on."

Derek could only comfort himself, "It's okay, I'll wait for you. Just don't make me wait until I'm old."

Laura chuckled, feeling sweet inside.

Laura's good mood lasted until she got to the office. "Remember to take some time off next month. Elliott and Julia are getting married. Make sure to bring your kids to Austin for the wedding."

Cassie, sitting at her desk, looked up, her beautiful eyes blank with surprise, "Elliott and Julia?"

"Yes."

Laura laughed, "You have the Wittelsbach family as your backing, and now I'll have Julia as mine. If Derek ever bullies me, I'll have Julia deal with him."

"Unbelievable." Cassie took a while to process the news, "But Elliott is indeed a good man. Julia has good taste."

"Elliott is a good man. I once suggested introducing him to you, but you weren't interested." Laura huffed.

"Elliott looked at me the same way he looks at you." Cassie shrugged helplessly, "Do you need me to talk to Julia about how you tried to set me up with Elliott countless times?"

"I was wrong."

Laura slumped over her desk, almost in tears.

Laura said, "Let's let bygones be bygones, okay, Cassie? Please don't bring it up."

"Are you that afraid of Julia?" Cassie laughed.

"No, I'm afraid of Elliott," Laura sighed, "Don't be fooled by his cold demeanor. When it comes to Julia, he treats her like a treasure. If I ruin their relationship, Elliott might kick me out of the family."

Cassie was unfazed by the revelation. Elliott was the type who, despite appearing indifferent to matters of the heart, was very principled. Once he fell in love, he would be very serious about it.

"Then I should prepare a gift for Elliott."

Cassie's smile slowly faded. "By the way, Megan's execution date has been set. It's on the third of next month."

"She's not dead yet?" Laura was stunned, "I always thought she was already dead."

"It takes time from sentencing to execution. Megan's case has been relatively quick." Cassie said, exasperated.

"Alright, I thought she was already dead."

Laura genuinely didn't care much about Megan anymore.

After all, Laura was very happy now.

Even Elliott was getting married. She felt their Miller family was lucky, too.

Cassie could no longer see any trace of the old sadness on Laura's face.

She smiled, feeling it was good.

Cassie just hoped Bernice could be as optimistic as Laura. Although Cassie didn't understand why Bernice, so young and in her prime, would sometimes show such deep sadness in her eyes.

Prison.

Megan was held in the innermost cell.

When she first arrived, she cried, raged, even broke down and despaired, and regretted.

If she could do it all over again, she would never have tried to get close to Joseph. Without getting involved with the top three men in Whisperlyn City, she wouldn't have become so greedy and malicious.

Every day, she was enveloped by the fear of her impending death. In just a few months, the mental torment had left her emaciated, her hair falling out in clumps. She looked older than a fifty-year-old woman.

"Megan, you have a visitor."

Suddenly, someone opened the door, and she was taken out.

When she entered the visiting room, through the special glass window, Megan saw Lucas. Dressed in a white shirt and black pants, tall and elegant, with gold-rimmed glasses perched on his high nose, he looked incredibly handsome at first glance. But upon closer inspection, Lucas seemed indifferent and aloof.
