Chapter 574

Laura's voice was a mere whisper, a soft murmur that barely filled the room. "You’re not lying to me are you?"

Cassie responded with a firmness that belied the turmoil within her. "No, I wouldn't lie to you," she promised.

Laura's gaze turned distant, her eyes unfocused as if she was sifting through fragments of a memory. Suddenly, tears welled up in her eyes, spilling over her cheeks. " Cassie, I'm so frightened. I was truly terrified. That lunatic Nathan led his people in and when I resisted, they beat me. They even threatened to take turns with me. They drugged me, but luckily David came."

Cassie listened, her heart ablaze with anger. She never imagined that Nathan's gang could be so vicious. If she hadn't informed David, Laura might have already died. It was despicable. "It's alright, it's all in the past," she forced herself to say, suppressing her anger. Laura continued to sob in her embrace. The drugs still coursing through Laura's system soon lulled her into a deep sleep.

Just as Cassie had tucked Laura in, the door to the ward swung open and Megan stepped in. She fell to her knees in front of Cassie, her forehead hitting the ground in repeated apologies. " Cassie, Laura, I'm sorry. I apologize on behalf of my brother." Megan's forehead bumped against the cold floor, reddening with each impact.

"Megan, get up," Joseph's voice echoed in the room as he entered shortly after. He immediately moved to pull Megan up, but she stubbornly refused, her tears falling freely. "Joseph, don't pull me up. This is my brother's fault after all."

"That's enough. You just injured your forehead and it hasn't healed yet. If you keep knocking it, something bad might happen. I won't allow you to kneel," Joseph ordered, his voice firm.

"Laura almost got into trouble. Even if it means knocking my head until it breaks, it's my responsibility," Megan countered, grabbing his arm and bursting into tears as she threw herself into his embrace. "Joseph, I truly feel sorry for Laura."

"Stop crying," Joseph murmured, lowering his head to hold her.

Cassie stood silently to the side, watching the whole scene unfold. Her husband held another woman she despised, their passionate display playing out before her. Cassie felt numb, as if she was watching a farcical performance.

She watched until she grew tired, bored of the spectacle. Finally, she spoke, her voice gentle but firm. "Are you finished with your performance? Can you leave now? It's late at night, and the patient needs rest."

Joseph's brows furrowed at her words, but Megan pushed him away, tearfully pleading, "I genuinely came to apologize. I hope you can forgive my brother. Please, I'll agree to any conditions, even if it means leaving Joseph."

"Megan," Joseph's handsome face hardened with anger. "How could you say something like that? What have you turned our relationship into?"

"That's not it, Joseph. I truly love you," Megan choked out, "but I can't help it. I have to atone for my brother. But my love for you will never change. I will watch over you from afar."

"Shut up, I can't do it," Joseph interrupted her, his eyes filled with deep affection. "Stop talking about it, I'll handle this matter."

"Joseph," Megan's voice was a whisper, their eyes locked, brimming with deep affection.

Cassie watched them, feeling like an outsider. She knew that when someone's heart turns completely cold, they can't even feel pain anymore. A lump rose in her throat.

Cassie quickly grabbed a garbage can and vomited. She was nauseous. She had never vomited so severely before. Bile, snot, tears, everything came out. Cassie knew she must look a mess right now. But she couldn't control it.
