Chapter 629
A downward curl of Megan's lips was nestled within the cradle of Joseph's arms.
Ascending the staircase, she wordlessly sought out a fresh set of clothes for him. Her voice, when it finally broke the silence, was tinged with a hint of longing. "Joseph, when will you have some free time? I've been thinking of going shopping. My underwear has been the same for far too long, I need something new."Joseph, on his way to the bathroom, tossed a casual response over his shoulder. "Didn't I give you a card? Go buy it yourself."
His retreating figure left Megan standing alone, a creeping sense of unease washing over her. The underwear Joseph had bought, was it not intended for her? Was it for Cassie? Or perhaps another woman? As the dawn of the next day approached, Megan found herself in stealthy pursuit of answers. She quietly pilfered Joseph's car keys and slipped into the garage, her intentions set on inspecting the driving recorder. Her investigation yielded unsettling results - Joseph had driven to an unfamiliar location twice the previous night. In the morning, Megan followed the breadcrumbs to the strange location. The sight of Cassie emerging from the premises contorted her face into a mask of disbelief. It really was Cassie.
Megan had never anticipated this turn of events. Where had she miscalculated? She had hypnotized Joseph, he should have been repulsed by Cassie. The only explanation was that Cassie was still attempting to seduce Joseph. The very thought of it filled Megan with a bitter resentment. At half-past eight, Cassie entered the office to find Edward, Chairman Wang, and the other directors awaiting her arrival. Charles stood to the side, his expression a tableau of discomfort. "An early morning gathering," Cassie remarked, settling into her seat.Edward's stern visage bore into her. "Can you still sleep soundly? Overnight, all three major construction companies we were collaborating with have severed ties with us. Now, over ten projects across the country have come to a standstill. You seemed quite chummy with Joseph yesterday, but now no one wants to associate with you."Another director chimed in, his tone laced with anger. "I believe Megan was the one who upset her yesterday. Those construction companies were only willing to work with our group because of Megan and Joseph's connections. They must have received some kind of tip-off."A wave of anxiety swept through the room. "What are we to do now? With each day of halted construction, the company stands to lose millions," a director fretted.Edward's frustration was palpable. "The issue isn't the temporary halt in work, it's their refusal to cooperate." Cassie's response was a picture of calm. "If they won't cooperate, we'll find other companies."Edward's exasperation was clear. "You don't understand. The customers who pre-ordered the houses were attracted by the reputation of these construction companies. They are the best in the country, and the customers trust them. If we change the construction company, these customers will definitely complain, and our company's reputation will be tarnished."The room fell into a somber silence before another voice piped up. "The only solution now is to find Joseph or beg Megan for forgiveness."A shareholder chimed in, his tone accusatory. "You brought this trouble upon yourself, don't drag us shareholders into it."Edward's voice cut through the tension. "If you don't resolve this issue, don't blame us for replacing you. We're all striving for the company's benefit. As the chairman, if you truly care for the company, you wouldn't hinder its development."Throughout the barrage of accusations, Cassie remained unflappable. "Did I say I can't solve it?"Edward's skepticism was evident. "Are you sure you can fix it?"The directors exchanged uncertain glances. "Based on Joseph's attitude at yesterday's meeting, he seemed to be siding with Cassie. There might be an opportunity."
