Chapter 590
For the first time since his hypnotic enthrallment, Joseph had disregarded Megan with such totality.
Megan slowly lifted her gaze, her eyes following the silhouette of the retreating car. Her fists clenched in a silent manifestation of her burgeoning anger.
She had not anticipated that Cassie's demise would trigger such a drastic change in Joseph's demeanor. Hadn't she hypnotized him? He should have been devoid of any lingering emotions for Cassie. It appeared she had underestimated the depth of Joseph's affection for Cassie.
Yet, there was a silver lining to this dark cloud - Cassie was finally out of the picture.
From this point forward, her position would remain unchallenged.
Abruptly, her phone rang, Nathan's name flashing on the screen. "Megan, is it true? Is Cassie really gone?" he asked.
"Yes," she confirmed.
"That's fantastic! You'll soon be his legitimate wife, right?" Nathan's voice was brimming with excitement. With Megan as his ally, he would have free rein in the future.
"Keep your excitement in check," Megan retorted, her voice laced with impatience. "Joseph is attributing Cassie's death to you. I doubt he'll have anything to do with you now."
"What? Are you joking?" Nathan's initial excitement was replaced by laughter. "Don't worry, Joseph cares about you the most. Just pacify him a bit, and this will blow over."
Megan felt a headache brewing.
She couldn't believe she was related to such an unreliable person. If Nathan wasn't her own flesh and blood, she would have been indifferent to his fate. "I'm warning you, behave yourself," she cautioned before ending the call.
With her conversation with Nathan concluded, Megan set her course for the prison.
Shortly after her arrival, Nina emerged from the prison's confines. Megan had arranged for some inmates to harass Nina, but Nina's adeptness had kept them at bay. As a result, Nina was faring well. Despite her gauntness, her complexion had improved.
Megan was irked at the sight, but the thought of the impending blow Nina was about to receive brought a smile back to her face. "It seems like you're doing well in prison," she commented.
"What do you want?" Nina's voice was laced with annoyance. Had she known Megan was her visitor, she would have refused to see her.
"Hasn't anyone visited you recently? I have some news to share," Megan said, a smile playing on her lips. "Today marks the anniversary of your dear friend Cassie's death."
Nina's body stiffened. After a moment, she forced a laugh. "Don't fabricate stories. Cassie is alive and well. She even visited me recently."
"I'm not lying. She's dead. She hanged herself," Megan said nonchalantly, her fingers idly tracing her freshly manicured nails. "And soon, I'll be Joseph's new wife."
"I don't believe you," Nina retorted, shaking her head. Cassie was a vibrant, healthy woman. The thought of her taking her own life was simply inconceivable.
