Chapter 538
As the clock struck eight in the evening, Cassie returned to the grand mansion, her body weighed down by exhaustion. Upon her entrance, her gaze was immediately drawn to Joseph and Megan descending the staircase in unison.
Joseph, his attire a stark contrast of black and white stripes, wore his hair disheveled, strands falling onto his forehead. His usually piercing gaze was softened, exuding a calm and gentle aura.
Beside him, Megan was dressed in a denim dress, her slender waist and delicate skin giving her an air of fragility. They appeared as if they were the rightful owners of the house, a sight that stirred discomfort within Cassie.
In the past, Cassie held the title of being more beautiful than Megan. However, since her disfigurement, her skin had lost its former glory.
" Cassie, you're back. I've just finished treating Joseph," Megan greeted her softly.
"Do you realize the time? It's already eight o'clock. I permitted you to work, yet you couldn't even make it back for dinner," Joseph's frown deepened, his tone laced with displeasure. Cassie had been the one to invite Megan to the mansion to treat him, but she only returned once the treatment was complete.
"Joseph, don't be so harsh. Women need their freedom too," Megan countered, a smile playing on her lips.
The sound of Megan and Joseph addressing each other by their first names was akin to a duet, one that grated on Cassie's nerves. "Miss Ray, did you hear? Your stepmother passed away in the bathroom today."
"I know..." Megan's eyes welled up with tears. "I saw her this morning, and I didn't expect her to fall as soon as I turned around. I should have stayed a little longer."
"Is that so?" Cassie's mind flashed back to Laura's speculation, and she found herself viewing Megan in a new, chilling light. "I visited your father in the hospital today. He's pitiful, old and alone, with his wife gone and no one to care for him. He can't even fetch a water bottle when he needs to use the bathroom. You and your brother have successful careers and plenty of money. Even if you don't like your father, can't you at least hire a maid?"
"You're right, I haven't done enough as a child," Megan admitted, her voice laced with bitterness.
"Enough, you've done your best. It's Cassie who doesn't understand." Joseph's gaze met Cassie's, a hint of reproach in his eyes. " Cassie, that's someone else's business, you don't understand at all, so you should stay out of it. Megan didn't fail to hire a caretaker; it's her dad who didn't want one. I heard her mention it this afternoon. Her stepmother passed away, and she's planning the funeral for Nina's mom. Megan is already very kind."
Cassie looked at Joseph, who was completely siding with Megan, and felt a surge of frustration. Was his brain filled with nothing but water? It was clear to her that Megan was a manipulative woman, yet Joseph was blind to her true nature.
"Alright, Joseph. If Cassie is concerned about a friend's family matters, it shows she has a kind heart. I have to go now; I still need to go to the funeral home tomorrow," Megan said, her voice heavy with sorrow.
Cassie was at a loss for words. If Megan were to handle Nina's mom's funeral, the poor woman would probably not rest in peace. "No need, we will take care of her funeral."
"Don't be ridiculous, what can you do when you are pregnant?" Joseph retorted angrily. "You and Nina's mom are not even mother and daughter, you can't even take her remains back."
" Cassie, don't worry, I will take care of her remains," Megan reassured her, a smile on her face.
Cassie gritted her teeth in response.
