Chapter 539
The possibility hung heavy in the air that Nina's mother may have been murdered by Megan. A woman as malevolent as Megan would never allow her spirit to find peace.
After Megan's departure, Cassie was consumed by a fury so intense that she couldn't even bring herself to acknowledge Joseph.
" Cassie, are you still upset about this morning's events?" Joseph implored, struggling to keep pace with her. "Why must we constantly clash over matters concerning the Zenith family? I assure you, once Megan has healed me, I will distance myself from her. Will that suffice?"
Cassie spun around abruptly, her eyes ablaze with anger. "Joseph, can't you see that you always side with Megan whenever she's around? It's as if I'm the one being unreasonable."
Joseph felt a pang of injustice. " Cassie, why must you always bristle at my interactions with Megan? The affairs of the Zenith family are not our concern. Why do you care so much?"
"And why do you?" Cassie retorted, taking a deep breath. She had no desire to quarrel with Joseph, knowing that each dispute only drove a deeper wedge between them. But his words had sparked a fury within her that she couldn't contain.
With a forceful slam, Cassie closed the door behind her, feeling utterly drained. The thought of Nina discovering the truth about her mother's death was too heartbreaking to bear.
The following day, while Cassie was still at breakfast, Laura's call came through. " Cassie, there's been a tragedy. William suffered a heart attack this morning and didn't survive."
Cassie's spoon clattered into her bowl. "This morning, as I was preparing breakfast, Nathan casually mentioned the news of Nina's mother's death. William had a heart attack right then and there. I rushed him to the hospital, but the doctor said he'd lost the will to live." Laura's voice broke as she sobbed.
"I'll be right there," Cassie said, rising from her seat.
Joseph reached out to stop her. "Where are you going? Finish your breakfast."
Unable to contain her emotions any longer, Cassie shook off his hand and shouted, her eyes red with unshed tears, "William is dead because Nathan blurted out the news of Nina's mother's death at the hospital. They were so happy together, and it's all that idiot Nathan's fault. It's all because of you. Why did you save such a person? If Nathan had been imprisoned, none of this would have happened."
Joseph's handsome face hardened at her words.
"Now you're content. Nina is emotionally scarred for life, and the Zenith couple are dead. The only remaining members of the Zenith family are Megan and Nathan, and you're the one shielding them."
With a look of pure loathing, Cassie turned on her heel and left without a backward glance.
Upon her arrival at the hospital, Cassie found Laura in a heated argument with Megan at the entrance of the hospital room.
"Laura, step aside. It's only fitting that we, his children, take care of our father's remains. But if you're so eager to help..." Nathan smirked and winked suggestively, "You could become my woman, and I promise to let you send off my father."
"Have you no humanity? Your father just passed away, and you can still smile like that," Laura seethed. "If it weren't for you, he would still be alive."
"Why blame me? He would have found out sooner or later, and he would have died anyway," Nathan retorted nonchalantly. "I really don't understand why people get so upset over a third party. He got what he deserved."
"Nathan, you're heartless. Your dad raised you, at the very least."
"He always favored Nina and her daughter. It's already generous of me to take care of his body today."
"You'll be struck by lightning for this," Laura snapped, unable to hold back her anger any longer. She lashed out, kicking him.
"You dare to kick me, you little brat! Watch how I make you pay."
