Chapter 1756 A Compensation of One Hundred Million Dollars
"You're not my fan at all," Bernice cut in coldly, her eyes scanning the crowd. "I don't care who spilled my address or who's a real fan and who's just here to stir up trouble. But remember, today it was just one person's hand. Tomorrow, I might do something even crazier. As for the rumors about me online, I've got nothing to hide."
With that, she followed the cops into the patrol car and left.
Since she had hurt someone, they took her straight to the station.
Half an hour later, Fiona rushed in with a few people and managed to get Bernice out with the help of a lawyer.
They met in the police hall. Fiona looked at Bernice with a mix of emotions.
Bernice turned to the lawyer and asked, "Is the issue with me injuring someone sorted out?"
The lawyer looked uneasy. "Not yet. The other party is demanding two million dollars in compensation."
"Two million dollars?" Bernice laughed like she'd heard the funniest joke. "His hand is worth two million dollars?"
Fiona sighed, and Bernice finally looked at her. "Who leaked my apartment address? Who sent people to blend in with my fans and cause trouble?"
"I don't know, we're still looking into it," Fiona said, avoiding her gaze.
"It has to be the company. I just moved, and only people at the company know where I live," Bernice said with a bitter smile. "Fiona, you were at the company this morning. What did Mr. Jenkins say?"
"Mr. Jenkins said you should go see Mr. Nelson," Fiona said, looking worn out and helpless. "Bernice, I don't know why this happened. Believe me, I brought you into this industry, and seeing you like this is the last thing I want."
"I get it," Bernice said, feeling let down but still speaking softly to Fiona. "Fiona, I trust you. I never blamed you. I'm just really disappointed."
"Bernice," Fiona said, her body shaking a bit.
"Give me your car keys. I'm going to see Lucas," Bernice said, holding out her hand.
Fiona handed over the keys. "Mr. Nelson is at the Nelson Group headquarters for a meeting today."
Bernice drove off.
She headed to the Nelson Group. When she got there, the receptionist said, "Ms. Ramsey, Mr. Nelson said if you come, you should wait in his office. He's still in a meeting."
"Thanks."
As Bernice walked to the elevator, she heard people whispering behind her.
"Isn't that Bernice? What's she doing here?"
"Maybe she's here to beg Mr. Nelson to help her out."
"She's been with other guys. Mr. Nelson probably doesn't care about her anymore."
Bernice never thought she'd be mocked by even the low-level employees of the Nelson Group.
In her life, so many of her humiliations came from Lucas.
Even in her past life, when he was scared she'd end up in jail, she never thought of getting back at Lucas because she believed he was also tricked.
Lucas was too powerful; she couldn't take him down.
Now, she just wanted to leave him, to be free of him.
But fate seemed determined not to let Lucas let her go.
Bernice sighed. She had set up this situation for Lucas, but Lucas used her to divert attention.
It was ridiculous.
She waited in the office for an hour.
Finally, Lucas walked in.After closing the door, Lucas settled into his office chair, his handsome face slightly tilted up as he looked at Bernice through his glasses. "What's the matter?"
Bernice thought this was the most ridiculous thing she'd ever heard.
Even though she usually kept her cool, she couldn't help but tremble slightly.
"My reputation is in the gutter. All the advertisers and directors are calling to cancel their contracts with me. I've become a pariah. Mr. Nelson, don't you know?"
Bernice couldn't hold back anymore. She grabbed a vase from the decorative cabinet and angrily tried to smash it on the ground.
Lucas suddenly reminded her softly, "The vase in your hand is worth three million dollars. Go ahead and smash it if you want."
Bernice's hand froze.
Three million dollars for a vase was nothing to her.
But to the Bernice in Lucas's mind, that was a significant amount.
In the stalemate, she gritted her teeth and put the vase back, then rushed to Lucas's side, her eyes red. "You used me to divert attention for the company without saying a word. Don't you think you owe me an explanation, Lucas? Even if you don't like me, maybe I'm not as important as Sarah, but I'm still a person. I generate so much revenue for the company every year. You think you can just destroy me like that? What do you take me for?"
When she timidly put the vase back, Lucas looked down on her a bit.
At this point, he didn't even want to argue with her. He directly took out a bank card from the drawer and threw it on the table. "There's a hundred million dollars in there. Consider it compensation."
Bernice's eyes widened. As a professional actress, her expression made it seem like the bank card was an insult. "I generate several hundred million dollars in revenue for the company every year. You're destroying my entire career in the entertainment industry. You think you can get rid of me with just a hundred million dollars? Do you think I'm a beggar?"
"A beggar?" Lucas sneered. "Can a beggar have this much money?"
Bernice's face twisted with anger. "My value is far more than a hundred million dollars. I don't want money; I want my bright future."
"That's something I can't give you," Lucas said, looking at her with disdain. "You being with Gary is a fact. Blame yourself for being indiscreet. Besides, I think you're worth a hundred million dollars. The entertainment industry changes rapidly. Sure, you're popular this year, but what about next year or the year after? A single piece of negative news can ruin a star, and your affair with Gary is real negative news."
"If the company hadn't exposed it to divert attention, no one would have ever known," Bernice glared at him. "And besides my contract with the company, I'm also your woman, Lucas. You're too cruel to me, really too cruel."
Tears welled up in her eyes.
Lucas looked at those eyes. He used to think that when Bernice was cold, she resembled Nina a bit. Now he realized that upon closer inspection, they didn't look alike at all.
He impatiently stood up. "You were just someone to satisfy my needs."
Bernice's eyes widened in shock. "You're shameless. If you had the guts, you shouldn't have forced me back then."
"So what if I forced you? Didn't you enjoy yourself in my bed?" Lucas said, opening a pack of cigarettes and pointing one at her.
