Chapter 1621 Are You Worthy of Me Now?
Laura frowned.
She didn't want to meet Michael.
But as she hesitated whether to go upstairs to shower first or to greet Maeve, Michael came out of the playroom holding Maeve.
Maeve's eyes lit up when she saw her, and she stretched out her hands for a hug.
Michael quickly walked over, and Maeve immediately lunged towards Laura.
To prevent Maeve from falling, Laura took two steps closer and quickly embraced her.
As a result, she ended up standing closer to Michael.
A familiar feminine fragrance wafted to Michael's nose. Looking at her charming smile, he realized it had been a long time since he had seen Laura up close.
Once, she used to sleep beside him.
But he had never cherished her.
Originally, they should have been the happiest family of three in the world.
Michael's heart had never ached so much, densely packed with pain, making him wish he could just die.
Laura kissed Maeve's little face, and after playing with her for a while, she noticed Michael still standing there motionless, his bloodshot eyes fixed on Laura, filled with pain, regret, and remorse.
Laura's smile gradually froze. "It's late. You should go back."
"Okay." Michael nodded, said goodbye to Maeve, and then left.
The next day, as Laura came downstairs holding Maeve, she found Michael sitting on the living room sofa. Seeing them come down, he quickly waved to Maeve, "Maeve, Daddy's here. Did you miss me?"
Maeve blinked, her eyes somewhat confused, as if she had to think for a long time before recognizing Michael as a familiar person who had been there yesterday.
Laura handed Maeve to Arabella. "Please go feed her some milk."
Arabella walked away with Maeve, and Michael's arm, which had been hanging in the air, stiffened. He said dejectedly, "I can feed Maeve too. I did it yesterday."
"Michael, aren't you busy?" Laura turned her cold eyes to him. "As far as I know, the Ocean Blue group is not doing well. Do you really have the leisure to be here with Maeve every day?"
"I know your company wants to acquire the Ocean Blue group." Michael's eyes were filled with despondency. "I've completely ruined the Ocean Blue group's brand. It's too difficult for me to recover it. If acquiring it will make you feel better, then go ahead."
"What do you mean by 'make me feel better'?" Laura was both shocked and speechless. "Do you think I want to acquire the Ocean Blue group just to get back at you? You're overthinking it. The Ocean Blue group used to be the largest local brand in the country. Not only does DreamDazzle Beauty Co. want to acquire it, but other domestic companies do too.
She went on, "We want to integrate domestic and international resources to make DreamDazzle Beauty Co. go further. Besides, I'm no longer the president of DreamDazzle Beauty Co., and I don't make the company's decisions."
"Laura, do you really not hate me at all?" Michael asked blankly. "I hurt you so much before."
"I'm not as narrow-minded as you think. Holding a grudge against someone is a very unhappy thing."
Michael was instantly devastated.
The saddest thing in the world is when the person you once cared about no longer even hates you.
If she hated him, he would feel a bit better.
At least hatred would mean she still cared.
After a moment, he said in a low voice, "DreamDazzle Beauty Co. is your own brand. If you want to make it bigger, I won't resist. Let the Ocean Blue group become an asset to DreamDazzle Beauty Co."
"Don't make it sound like you're willingly sacrificing the Ocean Blue group for me." Laura didn't like the way he put it. "Even if it weren't DreamDazzle Beauty Co., the Ocean Blue group would still be acquired. And we at DreamDazzle Beauty Co. can offer a better price."
"Okay, I misspoke." Michael smiled bitterly. "My reputation is ruined. If I continue to run the Ocean Blue group, no one will want to acquire it."
"Glad you understand." After Laura finished speaking, she realized there wasn't much else to say between them.
"I'll go check on Maeve," Michael suddenly said.
"Are you planning to stay here all day again?" Laura suddenly asked.
Michael froze. "I'm Maeve's biological father. I didn't fulfill my responsibilities before, and you were right to criticize me. Now I want to spend more time with her. You wouldn't want to stop me from taking care of Maeve, would you?"
"You can take care of Maeve, but I'm afraid you have other intentions." Laura looked him straight in the eyes. "Michael, I hope you understand that I have no interest in getting back together with you."
Michael's handsome face turned pale. Under her cold gaze, his pain became increasingly evident. "Laura, you don't have to deny everything so quickly. I made many mistakes before, very serious ones. It's normal for you to dislike me. But we're still young, and the future holds countless possibilities. You can observe; I will change, really."
"Sorry, I'm still young, but you're almost a forty-year-old man." Laura interrupted him indifferently. "You're a man who's been through two failed marriages. Each time you divorced, you sent your wives to the hospital."
"Megan deserved it. She lied to me too much. As for you, it was a misunderstanding." Michael explained with immense guilt. "Laura, how about this: you can break my ribs too, so I can feel what it's like."
"Sorry, I have no interest in violence." Laura shook her head. "Your promises mean nothing to me, and I don't want to give you any chances. What you become in the future has nothing to do with me. Besides, you should understand, Michael, do you think you're worthy of me now?"
Michael was stunned.
Laura bluntly said, "Your company is facing delisting, your investments have failed, and you've been completely abandoned by the Jude family. You're older than me, and you have a history of domestic violence and infidelity. And me? I'm the goddaughter of the President, I have a thriving company, and I'm the youngest and most promising formulator in the world. Our Miller Group is also growing rapidly. The difference between us is like night and day. If it weren't for our daughter, I wouldn't even be standing here talking to you."
Michael's face turned ugly.
He had never thought about these things, but upon reflection, she seemed to be entirely right.
Once, he thought he was high and mighty, and she was just a socialite from a small place like Silverwood. Marrying into the Jude family was her good fortune.
Now, in a blink of an eye, their roles had reversed, and it was he who was unworthy of her.
"I don't mean to humiliate you," Laura said calmly. "Given your current status, ask any prominent family in the country who would be willing to marry their legitimate daughter to you. Even divorced socialites would think twice. So what makes you think you can dream of being with me?"
