Chapter 360

"Haven't you checked the news on your phone?" Lucas caught up with her, "Today's biggest story is just that; it's all over the internet."

She was momentarily stunned, but she knew Lucas wouldn't lie to her, though she couldn't imagine that Joseph was ousted for supporting her.

"It's no surprise; his character is flawed. He already had a girlfriend but still took advantage of her sister. He couldn't keep his pants on and ruined the Hernandez Group's fundraising gala with his vile actions. It's only right they fired him. Why keep him around?"

Lucas was momentarily speechless.

Then, far from being offended by the insults hurled at his friend, he burst into laughter. "Your description is spot on. Joseph really is despicable. His character is truly lacking."

Cassie frowned, puzzled by his laughter. "You find this funny?"

"It is funny," Lucas said, "But you're not entirely correct. The night of the incident, Joseph took Mildred to the hospital, and then he had a falling out with the Hernandez family. His dad said all would be forgiven if Joseph married Luna, but Joseph refused and insisted on marrying you, which infuriated his dad."

"Marry me?" Cassie wore an expression of sheer disbelief.

Lucas looked at her meaningfully. "Joseph built half of Hernandez Group's empire. For a wealthy family, playing around with women isn't a big deal. His dad wouldn't oust him for that; Joseph made the mistake of taking it seriously and really angered his father."

...

Stepping out of the hospital, Cassie was still in a daze.
She had always thought Joseph kept her around to be a secret lover, a hidden plaything - that he didn't love her.

But now, she heard from his close friend that Joseph had been fired as the CEO of Hernandez Group because of her.
The CEO of Hernandez Group is a position towering above all but one.
Everyone admires the apex of Madison.
Now, he had fallen from his pedestal.
Could Joseph, without the empire of the Hernandez Group, still be the same as before?

She had just gotten into her car when Leo Chapman suddenly called, "Cassie, do you have a moment? Let's meet."
"Sure." Confronting her father, Cassie knew the inevitable was upon her.

Forty minutes later, she arrived at the agreed restaurant to find Leo Chapman had already finished a cup of coffee.
Father and daughter sat together; never before had they felt such discomfort.
Finally, it was Leo who broke the silence. "Does it still hurt?"
Those few words of concern nearly brought Cassie to tears; after all, he was the only family she had left in the world. "It's bearable."

"Vera and Luna were furious last night, and not just them; even I was shaken."
Leo managed a wry smile. "Cassie, I know Luna and her group went to cause trouble at your company this morning. Could you please talk to Joseph and get them released?"
Cassie felt a coldness in her chest. "Dad, Luna came to my office with her uncle and friends to trash the place and try to hurt me. If the police hadn't arrived in time, I could be lying in a hospital bed by now. You're familiar with Clark's tactics."
"But..." Leo hesitated. "After what happened at the dinner, she was a victim, too. Anyone would be angry in her place."
She looked at her father, feeling a sudden chill. "Dad, do you also think I stole Joseph from them?"
"Cassie, I don't want your happiness ruined over a vendetta against Vera and Luna," Leo said with pain in his voice.
