Chapter 527
The mention of Nathan sparked a visible revulsion in Joseph. "He needs to change," he declared, his tone laced with disgust.
A smile bloomed unexpectedly on Megan's face. "I was prepared for a debate," she confessed, "but I didn't anticipate your ready agreement."
Joseph shrugged, "It's the least I can do for you."
"No, you owe me nothing," Megan demurred, her gaze dropping to the drink that sat untouched on the table.
A half-hour later, Joseph and Megan ascended the stairs together, their departure unnoticed by the other patrons.
From the shadows of a secluded corner, David emerged, a photograph clutched in his hand and a smile playing on his lips. Earlier that afternoon, while ensconced in his office, he had received an anonymous message urging him to visit this particular bar that evening.
" Cassie, it appears your predicament is escalating," David murmured to himself as he sent the photograph to Cassie via Facebook. The accompanying message read: [I happened upon this scene at the Milestone Tavern tonight. They retired to a private room upstairs. I heard about your pregnancy. Keep a close watch on Joseph. If you ever need assistance, don't hesitate to reach out.]
Upon receiving the photo, Cassie felt her heart shatter anew. Luna had spotted them leaving the hotel the previous day, and now Joseph was at the bar with Megan again. How frequently were they meeting? It seemed as though everyone she knew had stumbled upon them at some point.
What was the illness Joseph claimed to be treating? His hectic work schedule was nothing but a fabrication. His true desire was to spend time with Megan.
A surge of anger welled up within Cassie, overwhelming her. She could no longer endure this torment. She needed to escape this prison and confront Joseph, although she doubted anyone would support her decision.
After a moment's consideration, Cassie located Liam's number and dialed it.
"Well, this is unexpected. You're actually reaching out to me," Liam responded, his voice filled with surprise.
"Liam, I need you to escort me down the mountain. I have urgent matters to attend to," Cassie explained. The only person in the Hernandez family who might be willing to assist her was Liam.
Liam hesitated. "What could be so important that you need to leave at this hour? If my grandparents find out, they'll be furious. And then there's Joseph..."
"I'm not planning anything reckless. I simply have urgent business to attend to. I will ensure my safety and that of the child," Cassie assured him, her voice steely. "Liam, don't forget that you once caused me pain. If you feel even a shred of guilt..."
"Alright, alright, I get it. I'll drive you. Just make sure you leave without being detected," Liam conceded with a sigh.
Ten minutes later, Cassie stealthily climbed into Liam's sports car. The security guard, recognizing Liam's vehicle, waved them through without a second thought.
"Where are we headed?" Liam asked, glancing at Cassie. She was still in her pajamas, a testament to the urgency of her mission.
"Milestone Tavern."
"What could you possibly need to do at a bar at this hour?" Liam queried, his concern growing. He was well aware of how precious the Hernandez family considered her, especially during her pregnancy.
"I'm going to catch a cheater," Cassie stated flatly.
Liam's foot slammed on the brakes.
Cassie continued calmly, "You knew, didn't you? Megan didn't die. Joseph has been seeing her. You even warned me about other women being a temptation during pregnancy. You were referring to Megan, weren't you?"
Liam rubbed his forehead, a weary gesture. Women's intuition could be frighteningly accurate. "I've heard rumors that Joseph and Michael have been dining with Megan frequently. I don't know the specifics."
"When a man not only fails to avoid his former flame but actively seeks her out, isn't infidelity inevitable?" Cassie bit her lip, her voice choked with emotion. "I don't want my child to grow up fatherless."
"Alright," Liam conceded, restarting the car. Forty minutes later, they pulled up in front of the bar.
Cassie opened the car door and stepped out.
"Wait for me," Liam called after her, his worry prompting him to follow. He feared what might happen if Cassie were left alone.
