"The lights suddenly came on.
Then the blanket was yanked off her, and a cold male voice came from above. ""Get up.""
""Joseph, what are you going to do now?"" Cassie sat up wearily and looked up at him, only to be frozen by his gaze. His eyes were tinged with a frightening red, giving him a chilling appearance.
Joseph leaned over and looked at her innocent face, remembering the first time they met. Her every word, every subtle expression was still clear in his mind. ""Tell me, why did you try to seduce me at the bar?""
""Why are you suddenly asking about that?"" Cassie avoided looking into his eyes. She didn’t really want to answer the question.
But Joseph wouldn't let her dodge. He firmly grasped her chin so their eyes met. ""Was it because you mistook me for someone else?""
Her mind buzzed as if struck by lightning.

Cassie's mind went blank. How did Joseph know about this?
Joseph kept his eyes fixed on her, observing her face turn pale inch by inch. Indeed, her eyes were filled with panic, shock, and confusion.
His heart turned colder with every passing second.
Recently, he'd been acting like a complete fool, utterly convinced that she had fallen for him at first sight. He thought he was the one in control of their relationship, but ironically, she'd been playing him all along.
All the love was a lie, all the sweetness was artificial, and all the kindness was feigned.
How had he fallen for such a deceitful woman?
""No... it's not... I don't know..."" Cassie murmured, dazed and unsure of how to proceed.
""Your excuses make me sick,"" Joseph snapped, flinging her away from him. He pulled out a tissue and furiously wiped his hands as if he had touched something filthy.
Hurt deeply by his actions, Cassie's heart twinged. ""Fine, I admit it. That was the case at first, but later on...""
""Later on, you encountered David at Arthur's engagement party and realized your mistake. And that’s when you wanted a divorce, correct?"" Joseph had pieced everything together during the drive back. The signs had been there, yet he had been blind to them. Now, suspicion was omnipresent. ""Unfortunately, you got ensnared in the Brooks family's scheme and were on the brink of imprisonment. With no one else to turn to, your close friend implored me to maintain this facade, convincing me that your love for me was profound.""
Cassie's lips lost their color as she faced the accuracy of his deductions. He had been astute, unraveling the sequence of events with precision. ""Yes, that's true. But then, there was the incident at the construction site where you rescued me, and it was then that my feelings for you began to take root genuinely.""
""Shut up! There's not a word of truth in anything you say.""
Joseph's rage became uncontrollable. He pushed her down onto the bed, his hands gripping her neck tightly. ""That night at the bar, even if Olivia hadn't spiked your drink, you probably wanted to sleep with David, didn't you? Juggling both me and him, doesn't it wear you out?""
""Is that really what you think of me?"" Cassie gasped, struggling for breath under his clasp. His aggression frightened her.
""Isn't it the truth? At first, when I wanted you, you were always reluctant. But once you knew who I really was, you suddenly wanted to sleep with me. It's just too bad those photos revealed your true face. Do you know the last person who crossed me is now six feet under?""
His grip intensified as his anger transformed him into a ferocious beast.
Cassie's face turned red. Tears were streaming down her cheeks, and the world began to go dark for her, the sensation of suffocation closing in.
With a furious push, Joseph released her and punched the pillow beside him with brute force.
His bloodshot eyes pinned her down. ""I won’t kill you because you're not worth the filth.""
With that, he stormed out, slamming the bedroom door behind him.
Cassie curled up, hugging her knees to her chest and burying her face within them, feeling a profound emptiness inside.
Maybe it had all been wrong from the start."
