Chapter 342
"I don't want to intrude, so I'll be off now," Cassie said, not wanting to stay any longer, and left after a brief farewell.
Ever so blunt, Mabel asked, "Liam, do you have feelings for her?"
With a flicker in his eyes, Liam looked down. "A little, but she's already got a boyfriend."
Mabel was taken aback. She spoke disapprovingly, "She's just the illegitimate daughter of Leo's family. She is not good enough for you. And I've seen her with Lucas; you know his reputation."
"Mom, Cassie isn't like that, and please stop referring to her as an illegitimate child. It's not nice to say, and hey, wasn't I considered one too?" Liam retorted, visibly annoyed.
"You..." Mabel's chest heaved with anger.
"Let's keep it down," Marcus intervened calmly. "Didn't we agree Liam should date whoever he likes? He shouldn't follow in my footsteps."
Hearing this, Mabel sighed, "I just don't want him to be deceived. Joseph is going to marry Luna. If you go for Cassie, you'll end up under Joseph's thumb forever, understand?"
Liam blinked. "Are Joseph and Luna getting married?"
"Your grandparents intend to arrange the marriage. The incident in France damaged your reputation, and Leo Chapman is a distinguished figure in Madison. Marrying his daughter would restore it."
As Mabel finished, Marcus suddenly said, "Miss Brooks, you're back?"
Everyone turned towards the door only to find Cassie standing there pale-faced for God knows how long.
"I left my phone," Cassie managed to say as she grabbed her phone and left hastily. She could only focus on Mabel's words, feeling as though someone had brutally struck her in the chest, her head throbbing painfully.
How ridiculous! Joseph was getting married, yet he was peeling shrimp for her, watching a movie, and giving her the wrong impression last night.
So, he wanted the best of both worlds?
Watching her walk away, a guarded spark flickered in Liam's eyes. "Mom, I like her. Sometimes, status doesn't matter. Luna is just empty-headed, but Cassie is different. She's grown through adversity. What if the underdog, this girl born out of wedlock, takes Luna down? Wouldn't that be something?"
Mabel was taken aback. She had met Luna – she was nothing but a spoiled brat. But Cassie...
"Alright, I'll look into her past."

That afternoon, a pile of files about Cassie landed on Mabel's desk.
To Mabel's amazement, Cassie had taken control of a public company within just over a month, even putting all the major shareholders in her pocket.
What surprised her even more was that Joseph had been suppressing Peace Group behind the scenes.
Liam had helped Peace Group once, and right after that, Joseph sent him to country F.
Marcus realized in a flash, "So Liam helped Cassie, and that's how he got on Joseph's bad side."
"Luna probably got Joseph to target Cassie, but Liam stepped in and messed up his plans," Mabel mused, even angrier with the truth uncovered.
Marcus patted her shoulder. "Let it be. Liam's been brought back by Joseph. And I think Cassie is quite impressive. Besides, Leo Chapman is quite fond of this daughter; the Chapman family has kept him from offering much support."
Something stirred in Mabel's heart. "She might not be as accomplished as I was at her age, but with a bit of polishing, she'll surely outshine Luna."
She recalled Liam's words; if Peace Group could rise quickly, Cassie might become Liam's right-hand woman. More importantly, Leo Chapman favored Cassie over his other daughter. If Mabel supported Cassie now, Chapman would remember her favor, potentially aligning with Liam when it mattered.
"Let's get them to meet."
Mabel was a businesswoman, always thinking from the perspective of her interests.
