Chapter 738
"No, I like you." Joseph asked in a low voice, "Sophia, when did Megan say these words to you?"
"When I was taking a bath," Sophia whispered.
Joseph felt a chill in his heart.
If someone else were saying these words, he wouldn't believe it, but Sophia was a little over two years old, with a simple personality, and she wouldn't lie at such a time, so it must be true.
He had never thought Megan would say such things.
Just because he reprimanded her a few times during dinner, did she shift the blame to Sophia?
This Megan was so unfamiliar to him. All along, Megan had been a gentle, caring, kind, and lively woman in his heart.
He had thought that Megan would definitely be patient with them when they had children in the future, but after bringing Sophia back today, he also realized that Megan had no patience for children at all.
But how could she say such cruel words to a child who had just lost her mother?
Had Megan changed, or had he never really understood her?
"Sophia, tell me, how did you fall in the bathroom just now?" Joseph asked in a low voice.
Sophia bit her little mouth, a hint of fear flashing in her eyes.
"You have to tell the truth. I like honest children," Joseph's eyes were serious.
"I just got out of the bathtub. I felt really cold, and I wanted Auntie Megan to hold me. Auntie Megan probably thought I wet her clothes, so she pushed me to the ground."
As Sophia spoke, tears welled up in her eyes. "Don't blame Megan; otherwise, Megan will dislike me even more. I miss Cassie so much. She really likes me, but I don't like it here."
"Okay, I'll take you to find Cassie. Stop crying."
Joseph picked her up and walked out.
"Is Sophia still in pain? Do you want me to call a doctor to come and check on her?" Hearing the commotion, Megan immediately walked over, her tone tinged with concern.
Joseph turned to look at her, and for the first time, he doubted what he saw on her face.
Did she really care about Sophia?
If she cared, why would she say those words to scare a child?
If she cared, why would she indifferently leave a child on the cold ground just because she was afraid of getting her clothes wet?
Joseph suddenly realized that he couldn't understand her. Perhaps beneath this face, there was a Megan he had never understood.
"No need. I'll take her back to the villa."
Joseph turned around, carrying Sophia, and left without looking back.
Watching his indifferent figure, Megan stomped her feet in anger. Joseph's gaze just now made her feel uneasy.
Could Sophia say something?
Impossible, she was still such a young child and had just lost her mother; it was the time to be careful and please others.
Joseph drove all the way to Cassie's house.
After knocking on the door for a while with no response, he had to take out his phone and dial Cassie's number, "Where are you?"
The sound of a movie playing answered him.
"Who are you at the movies with?" Joseph's tone became serious.
