Chapter 559
Cassie made her way back to the villa, her hands cradling a bouquet of flowers. As she approached the front door, she happened upon Joseph and Megan in the midst of their departure.
"Allow me to escort you home, Megan," Joseph proposed, his hand suddenly reaching out to grasp Megan's.
Caught off guard, Megan stuttered out, "Joseph," her gaze shifting to Cassie who stood nearby. She hastily withdrew her hand, her voice tinged with panic, " Cassie, this isn't what it looks like."
Cassie's expression soured, her eyes having caught the fleeting moment when Joseph had attempted to hold Megan's hand. She began to voice her disapproval, "Joseph, you..."
"Why are you here?" Joseph cut her off, his impatience evident in his curt glance.
Despite the onset of summer, a sudden chill enveloped Cassie.
Joseph's gaze fell upon her, his annoyance unmasked and his silence offering no explanation. How could he behave so callously?
"Joseph, don't be this way," Megan interjected, " Cassie is still your wife."
Joseph scoffed in response. "Had I not believed you to be dead, Cassie would never have had the chance to be my wife. Come, Megan, I'll take you home."
With that, he took hold of Megan and strode away, leaving Cassie standing alone.
A cold sensation spread through Cassie's body, her eyes welling up with tears. "Joseph, if you dare to leave, I will never forgive you."
Joseph paused, turning to look at the woman behind him. Dressed in a beige dress, Cassie was two months into her pregnancy. Her frail figure looked as though it could be swept away by the slightest breeze.
A pang of regret tugged at Joseph's heart. He yearned to return to her, but a voice echoed in his mind: Megan is your favorite person.
Cassie was not the woman he loved.
"I don't need your forgiveness. In fact, I have no desire to return to this place you call home."
With that, Joseph walked away, not once looking back. He missed the moment Cassie's face turned ashen.
How could Joseph be so heartless?
Where was the Joseph who had once promised to love her forever?
Where was the Joseph who had assured Cassie that he held no affection for Megan?
Suddenly, Cassie's world turned black.
Rosalind was quick to catch her, while Joe hastily called for the family doctor.
Upon hearing the news, Grandma and Walter rushed to the scene. Learning of Joseph's actions, Grandma was livid. "Absurd! Joseph is cavorting with another woman while his pregnant wife is at home. Someone call him back immediately."
"I've tried, but he won't answer," Rosalind admitted, defeated.
"Preposterous! Give me the phone," Walter demanded, dialing Joseph's number.
"Grandpa, what's the matter?"
"Joseph, your wife has fainted. You need to return immediately," he barked into the phone. "I don't care about your past with Megan, but you have a family now. You chose to marry her, no one forced you. Now that she's pregnant, you need to take responsibility. Be a man."
Joseph remained silent on the other end of the line. Just as he was about to respond, a woman's cry of pain echoed in the background. "I have to go, Grandpa. I'm not a doctor, take Cassie to one. I'll look after the babies. As for Cassie, I can provide her with some money."
With that, Joseph hung up, leaving Walter seething.
Was this how a man should behave?
How could his grandson be so heartless?
Turning around, Walter noticed that Cassie had regained consciousness. Her eyes were wide, her mouth twisted in pain. "Grandpa, is Joseph planning to discard me with a handful of money?" she asked, her voice filled with despair.
Walter froze, realizing that his hearing impairment had led him to turn the volume up on his phone. Cassie must have heard everything.
Grandma was equally flustered, worried that the shock would be too much for Cassie, who was carrying twins. "Stay calm. As long as we're here, we won't let him divorce you. We won't allow Joseph to be with Megan."
"But you didn't want Joseph to be with me before, and yet he still married me, didn't he?" Cassie retorted, a bitter smile playing on her lips.
