Chapter 588

Tears welled up in his eyes, uncontrollable and poignant. "You're the one who's sick, your whole family is sick," Laura accused, her voice a raw wound of pain. " Cassie was perfectly healthy. It was you who constantly pressured her, confined her, terminated the lives growing within her, and locked her away in the psychiatric ward. You drove her to madness, forcing her to bear her children for you and Megan. If you didn't love Cassie, that's fine, just divorce her. Why did you have to force her? Let her go."

Her words hung heavy in the air, a damning indictment. " Cassie is finally free, no longer shackled by you all. I am going to take her away, I won't let her body be desecrated by you, you despicable pair." Laura took a deep, steadying breath, preparing to summon assistance to move Cassie.

"What are you doing?" Joseph's voice was sharp, instinctively grabbing Laura's arm. "She is my wife, even in death, I will be the one to lay her to rest, not you."

"Do you even regard her as your wife? What right do you have, as the scum that you are, to claim Cassie's body?" Laura retorted, thrusting a blood-stained cloth into Joseph's arms. "Take a good look, this is Cassie's farewell letter, written in her own blood. She died wanting nothing to do with you, she didn't want to be buried with your Hernandez family, she just wanted to be far away from you."

Joseph stared at the crimson words, his heart freezing. Did Cassie despise him so much? Perhaps he should let her go. But as he gazed upon Cassie's small, lifeless face, he found himself unable to do so. He yearned to see her again, he couldn't imagine a life without her. "No, you can't take her," Joseph insisted, positioning himself between Laura and Cassie.

"Joseph, let her take Cassie away." The voice of Grandma echoed from the doorway. Joseph spun around to find Grandma, Walter, and Liam standing there, their faces etched with sorrow and accusation.

Liam's gaze fell upon Cassie, and he couldn't help but throw a punch at Joseph's face. "You bastard, do you have the audacity to claim her body? When she was alive, you treated her less than human. Now that she's dead, why can't you let her go?"

Joseph's mouth bled from the impact, but he raised his head, his crimson eyes blazing with a chilling light. "Today, no one is allowed to take her body away."

"Enough." Walter's voice was a sharp crack as he rapped his cane. "Joseph, let her take Cassie away."

"Grandfather, it's none of your business," Joseph retorted.

"It's precisely because I didn't interfere that we've lost both twins. I only found out about it these past two days," Walter retorted, his voice shaking with fury. "Did you act as a human? It's fine if your feelings changed, but you can't treat your own wife and children this way. Even your mother didn't go this far."

"Yes," Grandma chimed in, her voice cold. "When Cassie was pregnant, you were constantly with Megan, disregarding Cassie. You even locked her up when she had problems. When Cassie was suffering, you put her in a mental hospital. You were once a child too, how could you do such monstrous things? Now that she's dead, you still won't let go. Are you planning to let Cassie see how affectionate you and Megan are at the funeral?"

"I beg you, let her go," Laura suddenly knelt down, her voice choked with tears. " Cassie was never happy in New York, and I wanted to send her back to Madison, her hometown."

"Take Cassie with you," Walter commanded, waving his hand dismissively. Although he hadn't been fond of Cassie before, spending time with her in these last days had stirred some sympathy within him. He looked at Joseph and said, " Cassie suffered endless torment when she was alive, so let her be at peace in death. Don't let her resent you even in the afterlife."

Grandma's voice was filled with bitter disappointment. "Joseph, I don't understand why you have become so cruel."
