Chapter 1342 You Can't Just Mess with a Man's Head
When Cassie strutted downstairs with her bag, Joseph was floored.
He always knew Cassie was a knockout, but tonight? She was next-level, like an angel straight outta heaven.
He never realized how earrings and a necklace could make her neck and collarbone pop like that, making her look all delicate and crazy hot.
One look at her and he was already feeling the heat.
He took a deep breath, shoved his hand in his pocket, stepped forward, and asked in a husky voice, "Where you headed?"
Cassie shot him a quick, dismissive glance, "None of your business."
Her words left Joseph speechless.
Then he remembered her talking about finding a new lover this morning. He thought, 'She’s all dolled up; is she meeting some other dude?'
The thought made him insanely jealous. He thought, 'I went through all that trouble to ditch David, and now she’s gonna hook up with someone else? No way.'
"I'm not trying to control you. Wherever you're going, I'll take you," Joseph said, trying to keep his jealousy in check.
"No need, I can drive myself. Don’t follow me," Cassie said, heading to the garage.
Joseph narrowed his eyes, thinking, 'Cassie wants to ditch me and meet another guy? Not happening.'
He took long strides to catch up.
Cassie didn’t notice; she was busy deciding which car to drive today.
It had been a while since she showed off. With David out of the picture, she felt free and light-hearted.
So she picked a flashy red Lamborghini.
But as soon as Cassie got in, Joseph slid into the passenger seat.
Cassie’s face darkened, "Joseph, why are you following me? Get out."
"Cassie, you look stunning today. I’m worried some guys might get ideas. I need to protect you," Joseph said with a grin, pulling out his phone. "By the way, you might not know, but a lot of people now know you’re Isabella’s daughter. Netizens have figured it out, and they say your net worth is at least six hundred billion dollars."
Cassie thought in shock, 'Six hundred billion dollars?!' She was speechless at the netizens' nosiness. How bored were they?
Joseph continued, "Of course, I know you won’t patch things up with Isabella. What they say online is bogus, but others don’t know that. They just know your mom is loaded. There might be some desperate kidnappers out there. Even Everett got kidnapped, so it’s risky for you to go out alone. You need a bodyguard."
He somehow pulled out a pair of sunglasses and put them on, looking ridiculously handsome.
Cassie tilted her head and smirked, "I think you’re more dangerous than those kidnappers. At least they just want money. You’re trouble; you want to sleep with me."
"Cassie, you’re wrong," Joseph smirked. "Only ugly people are called trouble. Someone as handsome as me is called irresistible."
"Joseph, when did you become so slick?" Cassie glared at him.
"I can't help it. I'm chasing you. If I acted all cold and distant, wouldn't you just kick me to the curb?" Joseph said, straight-up honest.
Cassie thought about it and realized he had a point.
If Joseph had come at her with his old cold and bossy vibe, she would've definitely kicked him to the curb.
After all, who tries to win someone over by acting all high and mighty?
But she had to admit, the new Joseph was pretty sharp.
Unable to shake him off, Cassie had no choice but to start the car.
After about half an hour of driving, Cassie pulled over and bought a bouquet of carnations and a fruit basket.
Joseph caught on quick and bought the same.
Cassie shot him a look, "Why are you copying me?"
"Whatever you're doing, I'm doing," Joseph said.
Cassie just let him be.
Soon, she drove to the hospital.
At the VIP ward door, she took a deep breath and pushed it open. Inside were only Everett and a caregiver.
He was sitting on the hospital bed, wearing a gown, hooked up to an IV.
This was the first time Cassie had seen Everett in a while. The once handsome and vibrant boy was now so thin he looked like skin and bones, with thick bandages wrapped around his hands.
Although Everett had went to Ralph's banquet last night, he was sent to the hospital afterward.
Because Everett had been severely abused by David recently, he had held on for a day yesterday. After Ralph was brought to justice, he couldn't hold on any longer.
"Hey," Everett looked up and smiled brightly.
Cassie was stunned. She thought he would have an indelible shadow in his heart after being imprisoned for so long, but he was still that bright boy.
Unbeknownst to her, this made her feel a twinge of heartache.
It must have been the family bond because Everett was always Cassie's brother.
"Everett, I'm so glad to see you're safe," Cassie walked to his side and said softly, "But I still need to apologize to you, Everett. I sent you to Silverwood to investigate Olivia, but I forgot how dangerous people can be."
"It's not your fault. I was stupid and got used," Everett said with a grin, showing a row of white teeth. "My dad said it was a lesson for me. As the heir of the Wittelsbach family, I was captured so easily. I used to live too comfortably under my family's protection."
He was smiling, but there was a deep regret in his eyes.
Cassie suddenly thought he looked like a pitiful little puppy and couldn't help but reach out to touch his soft short hair.
Everett froze. Besides Isabella, she was the second person to touch his head like that.
Everett didn't dislike it; instead, he felt a sense of being cherished.
Everett felt healed.
But Joseph's face turned ugly. He strode over, pulled Cassie's hand away, and said with a smile, "Stop it. He's not a dog."
Everett was silent. He thought, 'Am I being scolded?'
Cassie looked speechlessly at the jealous Joseph in front of her, "I'll touch whoever I want."
"Cassie, you can't just touch a man's head," Joseph said seriously.
"He's my brother," Cassie said irritably. Although she didn't acknowledge Isabella as her mother, she still liked Everett, and Everett had never harmed her.
Joseph raised an eyebrow, "So your brother isn't a man?"
