Chapter 314
"Outside, Joseph's fists were clenched so tight beneath his sleeves that his veins throbbed.
Suddenly, he felt like a fool for speeding all the way there, worried about her.
It was just like before in Madison—deceived over and over again.
She could play the innocent and act shy in front of him, but she could also turn around and be utterly affectionate with David.
What did she take him for?
A bone-chilling coldness surged in Joseph's eyes.
He couldn't bear to listen any longer, turning on his heel toward the elevator.
Leo had just stepped out of the elevator when he bumped into him, his surprise evident. ""Joseph, what are you doing at the hospital?""
""I've got a friend here, so I was just stopping by,"" Joseph replied indifferently, his handsome face showing no emotion as he stepped into the elevator.
Leo was left speechless by his cold demeanor.
Back in the hospital room, David tenderly gave Cassie a glass of water. Leo watched them, his voice filled with relief and admiration, ""David has been good to you. He called me this morning after being unable to reach you and rushed over on a plane as soon as he heard about the accident. He was here before you even woke up.""
Cassie managed a weak smile, unsure of what to say.
Leo found a chair and sat down, exhaling a deep sigh, ""Compared to a son-in-law like David, Joseph just... I ran into him by the elevator. He said he was visiting a friend, but still, I'm Luna's father. He didn’t even ask me why I’m here.""
""Joseph?"" David looked up, his surprise evident. ""Joseph Hernandez?""
""Yeah, he and Luna have been seeing each other,"" Leo explained. ""But honestly, I don't think he intends to marry her. Luna can't see it, but it's crystal clear that he doesn't care about her. That's not how you act when you're really into someone.""
Cassie remained silent.
But inside, her thoughts were in turmoil.
Why was Joseph at the hospital?
Could he have been there to visit her? Maybe he was just outside the door but decided not to come in when he saw David.
Yet these were only her suspicions; Joseph was a mysterious man.
""By the way, Dad, did you send my car in for a check?"" she suddenly asked. ""It was a new car you bought for me; how could it just malfunction without reason?""
Leo's expression darkened. ""The police have been notified, but by the time they got there, the car had been torched. They speculate it was hit, leaked oil, and then exploded.""
Cassie pursed her lips. ""I'm certain the impact was on the left side of the car. It shouldn't have caused a leak or an explosion.""
""Dad will get to the bottom of this,"" Leo growled. ""If someone is after my daughter's life and I find out who it is, they'll pay.""
After mulling it over, Cassie suggested, ""Dad, let's spread the word to the police and the press that the perpetrator who tampered with my car has been caught. And for now, let's lock down the Chapman Estate and not let anyone leave.""
Leo was stunned. ""Cassie, do you think someone at the Chapman Estate had a hand in this? Impossible! Our household staff has been with us for over a decade. They are loyal and trustworthy.""
""Dad, I've only been to the office and Leo's Diner the past few days. Both places are highly suspicious. I'll spread the word. Whoever did this is just a pawn. They'll definitely panic,"" Cassie said earnestly. ""Just work with me on this. If we miss this person, I might get killed next time.""
Leo, after hearing this, could only nod in agreement.
...
Downstairs at the hospital
Joseph slammed the car door and lit a cigarette, beginning to puff clouds of smoke.
By the time Walter got in, the car was already filled with the smell of tobacco. ""Joseph, I've already looked into the car accident.""
