Chapter 902

Joseph felt a sharp pain in his chest, provoked by Laura's words. He looked at Cassie's indifferent and aloof face, suddenly recalling how, not long ago, they had been hiking together, her lively and bright features, her occasional coquettishness, and her sweet laughter.

nbsp;

But in the blink of an eye, why had everything changed?

nbsp;

"Sorry," nbsp;Joseph said.

nbsp;

"You don't need to say sorry." Cassie's cold voice interrupted him, nbsp;"because I will never forgive you."

nbsp;

"You should go back to your Megan," Laura said mockingly. "After all, when Megan is in trouble, you always rush to her side without hesitation and protect her unconditionally. Joseph, in your eyes, Megan holds a special place. Why don't you admit it? On one hand, you claim you don't love her anymore but still want to protect Megan. On the other hand, you desire Cassie's love but expect her to come back no matter how much you hurt her. Are you trying to play the tragic hero?"

nbsp;

Joseph's handsome face turned pale from the rebuke. Laura felt a twisted sense of satisfaction seeing this.

nbsp;

"By the way, I accidentally overheard that when you broke up with Megan, you gave her millions in cash, a house, and a car. My God, that must be the most expensive breakup fee in the world. So, what did you give Cassie when you divorced her?" nbsp;Laura added.

nbsp;

"Cassie, I won't do this again, I swear!" Joseph was in a panic.

nbsp;

With every word Laura said, he became acutely aware of how unfair he had been to Cassie.

nbsp;

"Stop swearing. Your promises disgust me. Joseph, could you stay away from me? What you gave me wasn't happiness but repeated pain that pushed me into the abyss. I will never forgive you, so stop disgusting me," nbsp;Cassie stated.

nbsp;

Cassie got into the elevator without looking back.

nbsp;

Joseph, facing her look of loathing, felt as if his legs were filled with lead. He wanted to move closer, but his legs felt nbsp;too heavy to move. It wasn't until Joseph left that he felt his body had been drained of all energy. He didn't know how he managed to walk out of the courthouse step by step. He wandered the streets alone for a long time until he was too tired to continue and sat on a bench by the roadside like a soulless puppet.

nbsp;

Nathaniel walked over, holding an umbrella. "Mr. Hernandez, the sun is too harsh. Please return to the car."

nbsp;

"Nathaniel, do you think she will forgive me?" Joseph looked down at his hands nbsp;and inquired.

nbsp;

These were the hands that had personally cut off Spencer's fingers. Cassie had begged him time and again to trust her. But what did he do?

nbsp;

He claimed to love Cassie but never gave her an ounce of trust. He even transferred all the pain and injuries Megan suffered onto Cassie and wanted to lock her and Spencer in the basement.

nbsp;

If she hadn't used Sophia to escape with Spencer, he might never have discovered the truth.

nbsp;

No wonder Cassie had said with such loathing that he should be locked in a mental hospital. Why had he been so blind? Yes, how had he become so blind and mad to hurt the woman he loved so deeply?

nbsp;

Nathaniel looked down at Joseph's vacant eyes. It was the first time he had seen Joseph like this as if he had lost his most cherished possession and was filled with confusion and helplessness.

"Mr. Hernandez, you should forget about Miss Brooks and move on with your life." Nathaniel sighed inwardly.

nbsp;

He had warned Joseph that night, but Joseph didn't listen, or rather, he trusted Megan too much. Now, he regretted it, but there was no medicine for regret in this world.

nbsp;

"Forget?" Joseph suddenly stood up, grabbing Nathaniel by the collar like a lion on the verge of collapse. "I can't forget."

nbsp;

"When you were helping Miss Ray with her lawsuit, you already considered that there was no future with Miss Brooks. Given that, you should have been mentally prepared," Nathaniel reminded him.

nbsp;

Joseph was stunned. Nathaniel's words felt like a slap across his face. Yes, he had already decided not to love Cassie, so why couldn't he let go now? Why did his heart feel like a thousand ants were gnawing it?

nbsp;

Nathaniel continued, "Do you feel guilty towards Miss Brooks? But the best apology for her is not to disturb her. She's right; if she hadn't been close to you, maybe there wouldn't have been so much hurt."

nbsp;

"Nathaniel." Joseph glared at him, never expecting Nathaniel to have the audacity to say such things to him.

nbsp;

"Mr. Hernandez, I apologize if I overstepped today," Nathaniel said with a bitter smile. "As an observer, I think Miss Brooks is too pitiful. When you divorced her, Athena stripped her in front of Travis and the others. You finally dealt with Athena, which made Miss Brooks feel a bit moved. But this kidnapping destroyed her hope again. You want her to forgive you, but how can she face Spencer's severed fingers in the future?"

nbsp;

"Yeah, she told me that severed fingers can't grow back," nbsp;Joseph answered.

nbsp;

Joseph gave a sorrowful smile, staggered back a few steps, and turned to leave.

nbsp;

"Mr. Hernandez." Nathaniel wanted to follow him.

nbsp;

"Go away, I need some time alone," Joseph said wearily.

nbsp;

In the sports car, Laura exclaimed excitedly, "Cassie, do you think Joseph will suspect Megan this time?"

nbsp;

"I'm not sure, but I think Megan will do everything she can to clear her name," Cassie said, knowing full well that she should never underestimate nbsp;Megan.

nbsp;

"That's true. Last time, we thought you had definitely won Joseph over, and no one would have known Megan orchestrated the kidnapping," nbsp;Laura replied.

nbsp;

Laura clicked her tongue nbsp;and then continued, "But Joseph definitely regrets it now. I feel like he'll come looking for you again. Didn't you see his regretful, sorrowful eyes when we left the courthouse? It was so satisfying."

nbsp;

"But no matter how satisfying, Spencer's fingers are still lost." Cassie couldn't help but lift her beautiful, slender fingers nbsp;and stare at them.

nbsp;

Seeing this, Laura's heart was immediately replaced by a wave of sadness. "It's okay. We'll eventually deal with Megan and her brother."

nbsp;

"Be careful yourself," Cassie warned. "I feel Megan is a very crazy person. To gain Joseph's trust, she could even commit suicide. Such a woman is terrifying."

nbsp;

"Alright, I'll be careful." nbsp;Laura saw David's handsome figure standing at the entrance of Willow Creek Estates from a distance.

nbsp;

"Are you really going to marry David?" nbsp;she then asked.

nbsp;

"Yes, he's really good nbsp;to me. I don't want to let him down anymore," Cassie said, her eyes filled with a gentle light as she looked at his figure.

nbsp;

Laura was taken aback. She could sense that after this case, Cassie indeed felt differently about David. They used to be together often, but she was resistant. Now, that resistance was gone.

nbsp;

For David, this was a gain.

nbsp;

"That's good. Such men are indeed rare. But if Joseph finds out, won't he threaten to break you two up like before?" Laura said worriedly.

nbsp;

"That's why I don't plan to go public nbsp;with this, at least not until we get our marriage certificate." Cassie smiled slightly.
