Chapter 1453 Makes Me Sick
Laura frowned and said, "It's gotta be because of the drinking last night. Bernice looked totally out of it just now. She's usually quiet, but today she seems even more drained and silent. Oh, I forgot to ask if she bandaged her hand."
"What happened to her hand?" Cassie asked, confused.
"Yesterday, when I brought up what Megan did to Nina, Bernice got so mad she crushed a wine glass." Laura sighed.
Cassie thought for a moment and said, "Bernice doesn't even know Nina. Why would she get that angry?"
"Why not? Anyone with a heart would be pissed off by stuff like that," Laura said.
Cassie went quiet. If it were her, would she be so mad she'd crush a glass with her hand?
Sure, getting angry was normal, but Cassie might slam the table or throw the glass. To her, only when anger hit its peak but couldn't be let out would someone do something like that.
"You get what I'm saying, right?" Laura said, still upset. "It's a shame the coffee pot didn't mess up Megan's face yesterday."
"Cut it out," Cassie said firmly. "Laura, you're a mom now. Don't be so reckless. Slapping or hitting Megan might've been one thing, but if you had really messed up her face, it would've been a crime. You'd go to jail, and don't expect Michael to cover it up. Megan is his bottom line."
Laura opened her mouth, but it felt like her throat was stuffed with cotton.
After a long pause, a wave of overwhelming anger and frustration surged in her heart.
Laura didn't want to be like this, but during the time Nina was in jail and William was hospitalized from the stress, she often visited the hospital and interacted with Esmeralda, even more than Cassie did.
Laura knew Esmeralda's gentleness and kindness very well.
She still remembered Esmeralda's tearful face, worried about Nina and William.
But such a kind Esmeralda died so tragically.
Megan destroyed the Zenith Family and ruined Laura's best years, even making Laura hate Michael. That's why Laura couldn't stay calm.
But after being reminded by Derek in the morning and now being scolded by Cassie, Laura deeply realized that she was too impulsive and irresponsible.
Cassie gently patted her shoulder, saying, "I get your pain. Nina is our good friend, and Esmeralda was a respected elder. And yeah, I remember what Megan did to Joseph. But Joseph and I are looking for a proper way to deal with it. Getting back at Megan isn't worth wrecking our lives."
"I get it." Laura nodded heavily.
The two took the elevator down, and as soon as they stepped out, they saw Michael walking over with a lab report.
Since they weren't far apart, Michael immediately saw them. His handsome face darkened, and he walked over with a heavy and complex look in his eyes, focusing on Laura. "What are you doing here? Are you here to cause trouble for Megan again?"
"So Megan is staying here too," Laura sneered, unable to hold back her disgust at seeing Michael protect Megan. "But with her minor injuries, staying in the hospital is a waste of medical resources."
Michael's eyes flashed with anger. Looking at Laura's face, which he once found so beautiful, he now felt it was unfamiliar after seeing her hysterical outburst yesterday. "Laura, do you know how badly you burned Megan yesterday? If her hand hadn't blocked the hot coffee, her whole face would be ruined now."
"Too bad I didn't splash her face," Laura shot back.
Michael's eyes blazed with fury. "Do you have any humanity? Do you know that if it weren't for the fact that you're my wife, I would have had you arrested? Megan has been begging me not to pursue it. She just wants to let it go, but you keep pushing her."
"So I should thank you for not having me arrested?" Laura sneered, her hatred for Michael growing.
No matter how much he protected Megan before, she didn't hate him because loving someone was a personal matter. But he couldn't use that love as a weapon against others.
Michael irritably unbuttoned his shirt collar. "You don't need to mock me. Ask yourself if what you did yesterday was right. You almost killed Megan and ruined her life, but she still doesn't hate you and didn't call the police. Why can't you learn to be forgiving? Come with me to apologize to Megan and ask for her forgiveness."
He reached out to grab Laura's hand.
But Laura was faster, slapping him hard across the face. She glared at him with intense hatred. "You want me to apologize to Megan? Dream on. Even if Megan dies, I'll go to her grave and stomp on it."
"Cassie, let's go." With that, Laura grabbed Cassie's hand and stormed off.
Laura feared that if she looked at Michael any longer, she would hit him again.
Michael, however, wouldn't let them go. He blocked their way and looked down at Cassie. "I just want to know if Joseph has regained any of his memory."
Cassie knew that denying it would be best, but given the state of Michael and Laura's relationship, reconciliation seemed impossible. So she admitted openly, "His memory has recovered quite well. He remembers most things, except for a few occasional gaps."
Michael was overjoyed. "So Megan didn't lie to me."
"It's been about half a month. Are you planning to send Megan abroad?" Cassie asked, staring at him.
Michael awkwardly said, "I was planning to send her abroad in the next couple of days, but her hand got burned. It will take at least four or five days to treat, and it's uncertain if it will fully heal. But Laura, I beg you, you're still my wife in name. I don't want to delve into who was right or wrong in the past. I just want you to apologize to her, and let this be the end of it, okay?"
"Michael, you don't understand. Standing in front of you right now makes me sick. I can't wait to divorce you."
Laura didn't look at him again and pulled Cassie away.
Michael's face turned extremely grim as he grabbed her wrist.
Laura shook off his hand and walked away without looking back.
Michael watched her back, feeling disappointed.
He even felt a bit of resentment towards Laura. Why could she never understand him or see things from his perspective?
That day, Michael was in and out of the hospital.
In the afternoon, as Bernice was about to leave after her IV treatment, she saw Michael's departing figure.
Bernice's eyes narrowed tightly.
