Chapter 582

The words hung in the air, a haunting echo, "Why wouldn't I believe Megan?"

It seemed to him that Megan was always right. To him, there was never a doubt about it. The sentiment was a bitter pill to swallow.

Cassie was consumed by a profound agony, yet she found herself at a loss for words. A sound, raw and heartrending, slipped past her lips, the audible manifestation of her torment.

Immobile, she was trapped under the weight of Joseph, his forceful presence pinning her down. Joseph, however, was caught in a whirlwind of confusion, as if the woman beneath him had suddenly spiraled into madness.

She was akin to a wild creature teetering on the brink of a breakdown. In the midst of this chaos, Joseph's consciousness flickered, his grip slackening momentarily.

Seizing the opportunity, Cassie broke free. She snatched a bottle of toner from the washstand, hurling it with all her might at Joseph's head. Blood began to seep from his forehead almost instantly.

In a fit of rage, Joseph retaliated, shoving her away. Cassie was thrown against the wall, blood trickling down her thighs. As she slid down the wall, she clutched her stomach, her cries of pain echoing in the room, yet no words could escape her lips.

A sudden jolt of fear brought Joseph back to his senses. Ignoring the wound on his forehead, he scooped Cassie up in his arms and rushed out of the room.

After a harrowing twenty-minute car ride, Cassie was numb from the pain. She was silent, clutching her blood-soaked dress. Waves of pain radiated from her stomach, each one more intense than the last.

In her agony, Cassie's thoughts drifted to their dreams of parenthood. Both she and Joseph, products of unfortunate backgrounds, had yearned for the completeness a child would bring. She had once been grateful for the twins she carried, a blessing from the heavens.

However, as time passed, her joy turned into worry. As a mother, how could she protect her children from Megan's wrath? The thought of their nonexistence seemed less painful. At least they wouldn't have to endure suffering if they were never born. Perhaps, in a twisted way, this was a form of mercy.

" Cassie, hold on for me. The babies must be alright," Joseph pleaded as he carried her into the hospital. Despite being three months pregnant, Cassie felt as light as a feather, as if she could be swept away by the wind at any moment. A feeling of dread gripped Joseph's heart, a terrifying mix of fear and impending loss.

Cassie, however, seemed oblivious to his turmoil. Her eyes, heavy with exhaustion, slowly closed. Soon, she was whisked away into the emergency room.

Joseph paced anxiously outside the door, blood still trickling down his forehead. Nathaniel watched with growing concern. "Joseph, why don't you go bandage your forehead first?"

"I'm not in the mood," Joseph retorted, his hands trembling, stained with blood. His icy demeanor was intimidating.

The door to the operating room swung open, and the doctor emerged. "Joseph, we won't be able to save the patient's babies. We need you to sign for an immediate abortion surgery, otherwise the mother's life is also at risk."

Joseph's world crumbled at the doctor's words. "What are you saying? The babies can't be saved? You useless piece of... how did you become a doctor?" In his fury, Joseph seized the doctor by his collar, his eyes bloodshot.

His babies. His unborn twins. In that moment, Joseph realized the depth of his attachment to them.

"Joseph, there's nothing we can do. Any other doctor would say the same thing," the doctor stammered, fear evident in his eyes. "Since Cassie got pregnant over a month ago, the fetus has been unstable. She has had a lot of emotional distress in the past few days, one blow after another. There were already signs of a miscarriage, and she was carrying twins. I really tried my best."

Twins. His twins were gone.
