Chapter 789
Eric confidently interjected, "There's no need for that. Your only task is to make amends to Michael. You've tarnished his image and deterred potential suitors, so it's your responsibility to compensate him."
Laura was bewildered. What was Eric implying? Why was she struggling to comprehend? Cassie's expression tensed, "Surely, you're not suggesting that Laura should marry Michael, are you?"
"That's exactly what I mean." Eric nodded, "We really have no other choice. Michael's mother had arranged a marriage for him, but you ruined it all."
After Eric finished speaking, he motioned to Caroline, who boldly stated, "That heiress was impressive. The wedding was almost finalized, but you ruined it. Therefore, you owe Michael compensation for the broken engagement."
"No," Laura trembled, vigorously shaking her head. "My family is too poor. Someone like me isn't suitable for the Jude family."
Eric snorted, "We've investigated. Miller's family in Madison is wealthy as well. While it may not have been ideal before, considering Michael's current reputation, we can reluctantly accept it."
Laura was devastated and then said, "Michael doesn't like me, and I don't like him either. There's no love between us."
"Feelings can be cultivated," Caroline advised.
"I'm not pure. I'm not worthy of Michael. I was violated by Nathan before, even in the news. Many people know about it," Laura said directly.
"We checked. You weren't defiled," James added softly.
Laura couldn't understand how things had come to this.
On impulse, Laura declared, "I will never marry Michael under any circumstances. If you believe I have tarnished Michael's reputation, feel free to take revenge on me. I would rather die than marry someone like Michael. He is easily manipulated by deceitful women. How foolish would I have to be to marry him?""
"You..." Eric was pissed off.
As tensions rose, Cassie couldn't resist butting in, "There's really no need to argue here. Instead of making Laura pay here, it's better to try to convince Michael first. He definitely won't agree.""
"We'll make him agree," Eric said confidently.
Cassie was speechless.
"Cassie, let's go. There's no point in continuing this conversation," Laura said, pulling Cassie to leave.
Several bodyguards at the door immediately stopped them.
Cassie was very flustered.
As Cassie looked up, she saw Joseph's tall, imposing figure approaching from the corridor. He was still dressed in the same black outfit from the afternoon, but now he seemed to emit a cold and stern presence.
"What are you all doing?" Joseph said seriously.
Soon, Joseph reached the door, glaring at the bodyguards blocking the way. The bodyguards recognized him and respectfully stepped aside.
Joseph strode in, his gaze falling on Cassie at the door.
As Joseph gazed into Cassie's bright black eyes, he couldn't help but recall the message she had sent him earlier while he was at home, and a smile crept onto his lips.
