Chapter 625
The clock struck eight in the evening.
Cassie finally snapped shut her notebook, signaling the end of her workday. It had been three years since she had last set foot in the company, yet she had managed to compile all the necessary information in a single day. As she approached the front door of her home, keys in hand, an ominous shadow loomed behind her.
Cassie's instincts kicked in, quite literally, as she swung her leg backward in defense.
A large hand intercepted her mid-kick, and Joseph's handsome face emerged from the shadows, his expression icy. "Exactly where were you aiming that kick?" he demanded.
Cassie blinked her wide, innocent eyes, her gaze dropping unabashedly to the region she had nearly struck. "Take a wild guess."
"You're asking for trouble," he warned, his voice laced with irritation. He was dangerously close to needing a urologist.
Fueled by his anger, Joseph seized Cassie's leg, pulling it back.
Caught off guard, Cassie's body followed the motion, and she nearly lost her balance. Thinking quickly, she grabbed onto Joseph's shirt collar, yanking him downward.
Joseph, unprepared for the sudden movement, stumbled forward.
In the ensuing chaos, Cassie found herself sprawled on the carpet by the doorway, Joseph toppling onto her. His lips, as if guided by some magnetic force, found hers.
Cassie's lips were soft, reminiscent of jelly, and carried the faint scent of orange - a detail that tempted Joseph to take a bite.
Just as the tension between them peaked, the hallway lights flickered and died, plunging them into darkness due to an unexpected power outage. Joseph's throat tightened, their mingled breaths in the darkness igniting an urge within him.
However, the moment was abruptly interrupted as the elevator doors slid open, revealing a mother and her young daughter. The sight of the entangled pair startled the mother, who quickly shielded her daughter's eyes.
Flustered, Cassie pushed Joseph away, her face burning. "Um..."
"Sorry for the interruption, please continue," the mother hurriedly said, ushering her daughter through a nearby door and closing it with a snap.
Muffled voices filtered through the closed door.
"Mom, why did you stop me? I saw them kissing."
"Quiet."
"Mom, why don't they go back to their room to kiss, like they do on TV?"
"You don't understand anything about love."
"What don't I understand? It's like what they show on TV, love is uncontrollable."
Joseph's handsome face paled, embarrassment creeping up his neck. 'Love is uncontrollable? With Cassie? What utter nonsense.'
Cassie, mortified, wished she could disappear. She shot Joseph a glare, hissing, "Get lost." She opened the door to her apartment, attempting to shut it behind her.
A hand shot out, blocking the door. Joseph pushed his way in, closing the door with a finality that echoed through the room. Late at night, the spacious room seemed to shrink under Joseph's towering figure.
"Joseph, what do you want at this hour? Shouldn't you be with Megan?" Cassie challenged.
"You think I don't want to? It's all because of that call you made this morning, Cassie. You're so manipulative. You made Megan a laughingstock, made her cry, made her feel wronged." Joseph's anger had been simmering since that phone call, especially after hearing from shareholders about Megan's humiliation during the meeting and her tearful exit, all thanks to Cassie. He wanted nothing more than to wring Cassie's neck.
"You care, don't you?" Cassie crossed her arms defiantly. "It's not like I forced you to say those things."
"Do you think that just because we're married, I won't touch you?" Joseph's dark eyes narrowed dangerously. "The last person who crossed me is already dead."
"Are you talking about Nina?" Cassie asked abruptly.
Joseph's expression faltered, and after a moment, he retorted coldly, "That was Nina's own fault. Who told her to try to escape by jumping into the sea while she was in prison? Becoming fish food was inevitable."
