Chapter 1758 The Price

Max was floored. "Terminate the contract?"

"Absolutely," Lucas replied, ice-cold. "Her reputation's in the gutter, and she's making less than the newbies. Why keep her?"

"That's brutal," Max gasped. He knew Lucas was tough on Bernice, but this was next-level. Especially since Lucas had been with her.

"She brought it on herself," Lucas said, shrugging. "Terminating the contract is better. Otherwise, we'd waste money and resources trying to force her comeback. Plus, with people in the company who love to kick others when they're down, especially Sarah, who knows what she'd do if Bernice stayed."

"True," Max nodded. "Sarah would totally do something like that. You don't know, but this morning when Bernice left her apartment, her address got leaked. A mob attacked her, blocked her car, and even smashed it. Luckily, the cops showed up in time. The investigation suggests someone instigated it, but no one's admitting anything."

Lucas was shocked and frowned. Bernice hadn't mentioned this earlier. "You think it was Sarah?"

"Not sure," Max coughed. Erin was so protective of Sarah that he didn't want to say anything.

"Got it," Lucas said, rubbing his temples, his dislike for Sarah growing. "Go ahead and arrange the contract termination."

Not long after Bernice left the Nelson Group, she got a call from Max, asking her to come to the company.

Half an hour later, she showed up at Dreamscape Entertainment Group.

As soon as she walked in, a bunch of employees started whispering and gossiping behind her back.

"Looks like things are changing at Dreamscape."

"I heard Fiona's been assigned to manage Elise Sinclair and won't be handling Bernice anymore."

"Well, Fiona's one of the best managers here. No way she'd waste time on a disgraced artist."

"Didn't Bernice also sleep with Mr. Nelson? The difference in treatment between her and Sarah is crazy."

"Can you even compare Bernice to Sarah? Besides, Sarah only slept with Mr. Nelson, unlike Bernice, who's been with other guys and even had an abortion."

Bernice was used to the gossip, but the more they talked, the wilder it got. They even said she had an abortion. Her brows furrowed, and just as she was about to turn around, Sarah's scolding voice cut through the chatter.

"Don't you people have work to do? What are you gossiping about?" Sarah looked at Bernice with a weird smile. "Bernice is such a beauty; it's not your place to gossip about her having an abortion."

The employees, seeing Sarah, immediately straightened up and said, "Sorry, Miss Sullivan, we won't do it again."

"Good, now get back to work." Sarah waved her hand like she owned the place.

Bernice didn't bother with Sarah and just watched her little show.

"Bernice, I'm sorry. They were gossiping about you and should apologize. But what can you do when you have no status in the company?" Sarah walked closer, looking smug. "That's why you can't afford to have a low point. Even a few employees dare to give you attitude when you're down.""That depends on the person. Some folks just love kicking others when they're down," Bernice shot a cold glance at the bodyguards and assistants trailing behind Sarah.

It was the first time Bernice had seen someone bring bodyguards into the company. Usually, the rules kept them at the entrance.

Sarah was really getting full of herself.

"How dare you talk to Ms. Sullivan like that?"

One of Sarah's bodyguards stepped forward, all puffed up. "Apologize to Ms. Sullivan right now."

"Do you think I'm afraid of trouble?" Bernice stared coldly at Sarah. "Sarah, Dreamscape Entertainment Group isn't your company. I don't know how you got Lucas to protect you so much, but you should know his temper."

A flicker of fear crossed Sarah's face, but remembering how Bernice had slapped her that day, she smiled and stepped closer, lowering her voice. "Bernice, you probably still don't get why all your past scandals came out overnight. Let me clue you in. A few days ago, the internet was buzzing with rumors about me and Herschel, so Lucas and I came up with this idea to use your scandals to divert attention. Look how good Lucas is to me. With just one word, I ruined you. This is the price you pay for slapping me."

Bernice was stunned.

After a few seconds, she pieced it together. This was definitely Sarah's idea.

But this move not only diverted attention from Sarah's scandal but also made people overlook the company's fine.

In other words, her sacrifice let Sarah win and benefited the company.

Only Bernice was thoroughly used.

Her beautiful face darkened.

Seeing this, Sarah laughed triumphantly. "Can you compare to me? The fact is, in Lucas's heart, you are nothing."

Sarah paused and signaled to her bodyguards. "Bernice insulted me. Give her a couple of slaps."

That day, Bernice had slapped her in front of everyone, and today she would return the favor.

The bodyguards immediately rolled up their sleeves and walked toward Bernice, grabbing her arms from both sides.

Bernice squinted her eyes, ready to fight back.

Max suddenly walked over quickly. "Stop."

Sarah was annoyed. "Mr. Jenkins, Bernice insulted me just now. I was just so angry that I wanted to teach her a lesson. Don't stop me."

Bernice laughed coldly. "I just said you kick people when they're down. Is that an insult? If you want to bully me, just say it. There's no need to smear me, and there's no need to bring two big bodyguards as soon as you enter the company."

"Who told you to hit me in the company last time? I brought people in just to protect myself."

"Alright, Sarah." Max glared at her. "Don't go too far."

To be honest, he couldn't stand Sarah. She had no acting skills, couldn't sing, and was arrogant. If Lucas didn't protect her, he wouldn't promote her at all.

Sarah's face changed slightly. She bit her lip, snorted, and left with her entourage.

Max was slightly annoyed. Sarah was too arrogant. He was the president, yet she disrespected him because the Nelson family protected her.

"Bernice, come with me." Max walked upstairs.

Bernice followed.

Once they were in the office and the door was closed, Bernice said, "Mr. Jenkins, thanks for stepping in back there."
