Chapter 1023 Take Me and My Children Away
Cameron had vanished from her life for over twenty years, but she never forgot he was her first husband and Joseph's biological father.
She had often resented Cameron for bringing Joseph into her life, disrupting her once peaceful existence.
She thought she'd never see him again.
But out of the blue, Cameron had become the chairman of the Garrison Group and had saved her from being humiliated by Marcus at the auction.
"How is he now?" Mabel asked hesitantly after a long pause.
"Well, thanks to you, he lived miserably for a while," Joseph said, recounting Marcus's assassination attempts on Cameron.
Mabel was stunned. "How could it be?"
Joseph frowned. "Why would he lie about that now? One side of his face is scarred, Mom. He never drugged you; it was Marcus who tried to drug you, and Cameron accidentally drank that glass of wine. You've always misunderstood him."
Seeing Mabel's confused expression, Joseph sighed.
He was too much like Mabel, making the same foolish mistakes. He understood what she was thinking.
"Don't tell anyone about this for now, and don't go looking for him," Joseph said before striding away.
Mabel stood there, lost in thought. She remembered the first time she met Cameron. He was wearing a white shirt, standing in the student council meeting room. He was the most handsome man she had ever seen. But he rarely spoke unlike Marcus, who was always around her.
Back then, Marcus was talented and attentive to her.
Compared to Cameron's coldness, she naturally preferred Marcus's enthusiasm.
It was just a party that led to an accidental relationship with Cameron. At that time, Cameron was poor, and she thought he deliberately wanted to climb up to her. She often looked down on him, slandered him, and humiliated him.
Cameron had explained that it wasn't intentional, but she didn't believe him at all.
Until she got pregnant, the Hernandez family made her marry Cameron.
After marriage, she often had morning sickness and a bad temper, but Cameron, who was so cold, cooked for her every day. No matter how she scolded him, he remained silent.
When she was cold, he would bring her clothes.
When she was uncomfortable, he would take her to the hospital.
When she had back pain during pregnancy, he would massage her.
Gradually, she got used to it.
But later, at an exhibition, she met Marcus again.
The once high-spirited Marcus had become haggard because she got married.
She felt guilty towards Marcus, but she didn't expect that after that, Cameron ignored her.
She and Cameron started endless cold wars and arguments.
Every time she was in a bad mood, Marcus would appear.
Later, shortly after Joseph was born, she divorced Cameron and married Marcus after getting pregnant again.
After that, every time Cameron appeared in her sight, he was drunk, which made her disgusted and annoyed.
After she married Marcus, Cameron left.
He never came back.
In retrospect, many things made her realize that Marcus had ulterior motives when he approached her. If she hadn't been soft-hearted towards Marcus, maybe she and Cameron could have been together for a lifetime.
But she never expected that because of her, Cameron had suffered so much abroad.
Even though his family was poor, he was incredibly talented. If he hadn't met her, Cameron wouldn't have endured so much hardship.
For the first time, Mabel felt genuine guilt towards Cameron.
But she knew she no longer had the right to be by his side.
At the Peace Group, after finishing her work, Cassie suddenly remembered she had a missed call from Nathaniel after the meeting. She had been so busy she forgot to return it.
She quickly called back, "Nathaniel, what's up?"
"Big news." Nathaniel sneaked a glance at Joseph's departing figure. The current Joseph was walking briskly, in an exceptionally good mood.
Cassie had a bad feeling. Joseph had been staggering when he left this afternoon. He wouldn't do something foolish, would he? "Tell me what big news."
"Mr. Hernandez already knows that Oliver and Sophia are his children," Nathaniel explained guiltily. "I don't know how he figured it out this afternoon. He suddenly called me, asking if I had bribed the doctor back then and if you hadn't actually had a miscarriage. He seemed to have figured it out, and I had no choice but to confess."
So she had lied to him at noon that Oliver was hers and David's, and within a few hours, the lie had been exposed.
"When did he ask you?"
"A little after two."
Cassie thought, 'A little after two? He just left my place not long before that. How could he have quickly found out that Oliver is his child?'
Cassie's beautiful face darkened. "He didn't know at all. He found out about Oliver, but he thought Oliver was mine and David's. He probably couldn't accept that fact and said those things to you. Who knew you would blurt out the truth?"
"Really?" Nathaniel was dumbfounded and almost wanted to cry. So he had been tricked.
"Absolutely." Cassie was also on the verge of tears.
She had hoped that by making Joseph think she had David's child, he would give up completely. Now, Oliver and Sophia had been discovered by Joseph, and he would be even more persistent.
She thought she wouldn't be able to get rid of Joseph no matter what.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Brooks." Nathaniel wished he could slap himself. "But Mr. Hernandez said he wouldn't fight you for the children."
"Yeah, he won't fight for the children; he'll take me and the children together," Cassie said irritably.
"Where did Joseph go now?"
"He just left after a meeting. I think he went to the kindergarten," Nathaniel said softly.
"Alright, I have to go there." Cassie had no mood to continue the conversation.
After hanging up, she quickly drove to the kindergarten, only to find that Joseph arrived a little earlier than her.
By 4:30 PM, many people had already started picking up their children.
Joseph's tall and handsome figure stood out among them.
The security guard at the entrance recognized him and immediately had the kindergarten teacher bring Sophia out.
"Joseph, you're here so early today." Sophia skipped over to him.
Joseph looked at her with a mix of excitement and complexity.
Before, he didn't know, but now that he knew she was his daughter, his heart was racing.
