Chapter 80
"The Golf Course
Joseph swung the golf club with a loud ""thwack,"" and the golf ball vanished into the horizon.
Noah, standing beside him, felt a gust of wind sweep by, sending chills down his spine.
Ever since Cassie left, Joseph had been in this gloomy state every day, driving Noah almost crazy.
""Has Cassie not come back yet?""
""I don't care even if she dies."" Joseph snorted coldly and walked forward. SSuddenly, his stomach growled, embarrassing him.
Noah awkwardly touched his nose. ""I know you're used to Cassie's cooking, but you can't stop eating just because she's gone.""
""Who said I was used to her cooking?"" Joseph retorted irritably. ""Now that she's gone, I'll eat less to maintain my body.""
Noah felt helpless. For the first time, he sensed a hint of petulance in his good friend. He couldn't help but admire Cassie for being able to live with Joseph for so long without going crazy.
""It's Olivia and Arthur's engagement after two days. Cassie should be going. The Brooks family has also sent me an invitation. Should I go and... try to persuade her?""
Joseph raised an eyebrow. ""Isn't it Grandma Brooks's 80th birthday?""
""I haven't heard about that."" Noah shook his head.
Joseph's expression turned cold. It seemed that the Brooks family had no intention of celebrating Grandma Brooks's birthday in a grand manner. And yet, Cassie, that silly girl, still wanted to go, even if it meant being bullied.
""Why bother persuading her? It's her latest trick. Mark my words, she'll do everything she can to win me over before the engagement day.""
Joseph had just finished speaking when his phone rang. It was a message from Love J.
""As expected!"" Joseph thought it was a message from Cassie, but when he opened his WhatsApp, he saw that Cassie had transferred him a total of 60,000 dollars in three installments. His handsome face froze.
Noah leaned over to take a glance. ""Quite an extravagant way to make amends, huh?""
""Yes."" Joseph's face eased.
No need to say, this was definitely a scheme.
He saw the ""Typing"" indicator in the chat box and waited to see what she would say.
Twenty seconds later, the other person sent a message: ""The money includes the medical expenses from your previous hospitalization. I believe it's more than enough. The extra is just me being generous.""
Joseph laughed, but it was an eerie laugh. His veins throbbed intensely on his forehead.
Very well! This woman was indeed quite audacious.
Noah was impressed. She was probably the only person in the world who dared to stand up to Joseph.
""This is definitely a scheme. In order to capture your attention, she not only spends money but also provokes you deliberately. She's just trying to get your attention.""
Joseph sneered again. ""These tricks are useless. Even if she kneels in front of me for three days and three nights...""
Before he could finish his sentence, Cassie's screen name refreshed to ""A New Beginning"", and even her profile signature changed to: ""From now on, I want to be kinder to myself.""
Cracks appeared in Joseph's deep and angry pupils.
He put away his phone. ""From now on, don't mention this person in front of me.""
After saying that, he picked up his golf club and walked forward in large strides.
Noah was speechless. ""If you're not interested in someone, is it worth getting so angry? Can't you just be honest with yourself?"" he thought.
After Cassie impulsively sent that sarcastic WhatsApp message, she became extremely nervous.
She had been insulted by someone recently. Why should she endure until the end?
But seeing that he took the money without any response, her anxious heart finally calmed down.
Finally, she didn't owe him anything.
She put down her phone and focused on her work. She thought she would never have to face Joseph again, so she felt incredibly relaxed and at ease.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated, indicating a new WhatsApp message.
Thinking it was Joseph, she picked it up immediately, but it was a message from David:
""A fresh start is great. As a girl, you should treat yourself better. If you're not happy in life, it's not because you're not good enough, but because there are certain people and things that aren't worth cherishing.""
Cassie felt a flicker of warmth in her heart. Encouragement from others gave her more hope for the future.
However, she felt a bit strange. It seemed like David knew that she had been abandoned by someone.
And he noticed her updated profile signature so quickly; perhaps he was paying too much attention to her.
After thinking for a moment, she replied, ""Thank you for the encouragement.""
Even if David really likes her, she can't dare to imagine love anymore. She has been hurt more and more with each setback, not to mention that she is still not divorced yet.
In the blink of an eye, it was Grandma Brooks's 80th birthday banquet, which also marked the significant day of the alliance between the two families.
The birthday banquet was held at the only seven-star hotel in Madison. Hosting a banquet here is a symbol of status for many Madison tycoons. Unfortunately, it's not something you can reserve just with money. Tonight, the two families went all out and booked the highest VIP banquet hall.
Cassie stood outside the building, holding the invitation, with a sad expression on her face. Robert once said that in the future, her wedding with Arthur would be held here.
Yes, now it has become an engagement banquet, still with Arthur, but the only difference is that she has been replaced.
She walked in wearing the same white dress she wore to Grandpa Collins's birthday. A group of reporters was standing at the entrance of the banquet hall. As soon as she got closer, the reporters surrounded her.
""Miss Brooks, didn't the Brooks family abuse you? Why are you attending the engagement banquet?""
""Could it be that the Brooks family never abused you at all, and it was all your own fabrication?""
Cassie wasn't a fool; she could tell that these reporters were arranged by the Brooks family, and they must have been paid and instructed. Of course, she had already prepared herself mentally and remained calm.
""Today is my grandmother's 80th birthday. I came here to celebrate with her.""
""Really? We haven't heard anything about it. Today is the engagement banquet, and that dress you're wearing looks pretty. It seems like the latest autumn haute couture. Wasn't it said that the Brooks family mistreated you?""
Cassie sneered. ""So how much did the Brooks family give you today to trouble me?""
