Chapter 178
"The next morning, after breakfast, Joseph got ready to head to his law firm. Cassie caught his arm, ""I don't feel like driving today. I want to ride with you.""
He frowned slightly. His office was in the opposite direction of hers, and on top of that, he had a meeting today. Women – they get comfortable too quickly, he mused.
""Don't you have your own car?""
""But I was hoping for a little more time together during the drive,"" Cassie said playfully, her eyes sparkling.
Joseph shot her a look that said, ""You're such a handful,"" before relenting, ""Let's go.""
A rush of delight filled Cassie. She just wanted to enjoy the fact that, for once, Joseph wasn't dumping her at the subway station. After all, it had taken her a Herculean effort to finally win over this man.
Joseph's hand was injured, so Walter had been doing the driving these days. Morning traffic to the office was brutal.
Walter was chill about it, but Joseph? Stormy would be an understatement. Rubbing his temples, he was almost regretting agreeing to such a detour. In hindsight, hiring her a driver would have been simpler.
""Calm down,"" Cassie coaxed, her left hand gently resting on his. ""This traffic jam just means we get to spend more time together.""
She gazed up at him with playful, big eyes that reflected his image in the depths of her pupils.
Joseph's irritation melted away. His stern brows eased, and though he turned his face aside, a smile involuntarily crept onto his lips. ""You're impossible,"" he grumbled affectionately.
The tremble Walter gave the steering wheel went unnoticed; he'd never seen the typically grim and distant Mr. Hernandez turn into such a different person in love.
It seemed like the relationship between these two had taken a quantum leap. Walter felt utterly like a third wheel.
At 8:40, they pulled up in front of the office building.
As Cassie was about to get out of the car, Joseph suddenly asked, ""Didn't you say you went shopping for clothes yesterday? Why aren't you wearing anything new?""
The new clothes were, of course, still in the store.
Thinking quickly, Cassie replied, ""I didn't find anything I liked, and what I did like was too expensive. Laura, though, she splurged quite a bit.""
""Are you hinting you want me to buy you some clothes?"" Joseph raised a playful eyebrow.
Cassie's inner voice screamed: He's overthinking it again.
""That's not what I'm saying...""
""Fine, we'll go shopping after work,"" Joseph said, interrupting her.
Speechless, Cassie stepped out of the car. As it drove away, she made her way toward the office with a hint of exasperation.
Just as she was about to enter the building, a haggard-looking Arthur Lewis appeared before her. Whether it was the pressure from the Lewis family or his personal issues, he'd seen better days. Stubble lined his jaw, unshaven and adding to his disheveled appearance.
Cassie paused, almost not recognizing him. ""What are you doing here again?""
After that day, with the ugly truth laid bare by Joseph, she thought Arthur Lewis would never show up again—or if he did, that he'd disdain her.
Arthur Lewis handed her a card with his head bowed, ""There's half a billion dollars on this. Pay Joseph off and consider it the cost for the lawsuit. From now on, cut all ties with him.""
Cassie was taken aback."
