Chapter 184
"Just as Cassie was about to speak, he interrupted, ""The hospital paperwork is a maze, it's too much for one person. Your business can't be left unresolved, and now's not the time to keep your distance from me.""
Anxiously, Cassie chose not to argue further.
Upon their arrival at the hospital, someone at the ER entrance called out, “Who’s here for the patient? We need to discuss billing and insurance, but let's first make sure she gets the care she needs.”
""It’s me, it’s me!"" Cassie hurried over. ""Doctor, how is she doing?""
""Acute cerebral insufficiency, she needs a stenting procedure right away. Please head to the billing department as soon as possible,"" the doctor said, giving her the necessary paperwork.
Cassie dashed downstairs to make the payment and by the time she returned upstairs, Mrs. Parker’s surgery had already begun.
""I know the head surgeon here; I gave him a call to expedite the surgery,"" David explained to her.
""Thank you,"" Cassie said, visibly moved.
Three hours later, the surgery wrapped up. Mrs. Parker was wheeled out of the OR, and Cassie hardly recognized her.
Mrs. Parker, who’d once had a healthy glow beside her grandmother, now seemed utterly transformed with her hair turned white and cheeks hollowed.
What on earth had happened in these past days?
By five in the afternoon, Mrs. Parker had regained consciousness.
The first person she saw was Cassie, and tears streamed down her face, “I never thought I’d see you again.”
""I'm not really a Brooks. I was adopted by the Robertsons; you were with grandma for decades, you must know the truth.""
""Who told you that?” Mrs. Parker asked, agitated. ""You are a Brooks!""
Cassie was taken aback. “Olivia said so, and the Robertsons’ actions... I don’t believe they would treat their own daughter that way.”
""Poor child, that family, they're all heartless,"" Mrs. Parker said, coughing hard out of frustration. ""Upon adulthood and after her passing, you and Robert were to inherit a significant portion of Peace Group's shares.""
""They expelled you?"" Cassie exclaimed, shocked. ""I assumed you left because you were unwilling to care for grandma after her paralysis.""
""Your grandma was my savior, she took me in for a lifetime. How could I possibly abandon her when she needed me the most?""
Her eyes reddening, Mrs. Parker continued, “My dear, you’re not Robert’s biological daughter. Your mother is Isabella, your aunt. She was pregnant before marriage, and your grandparents, concerned about the shame and complications for your mother’s future, decided to have the child adopted by Robert, your uncle.”
Cassie’s head was spinning.
It had never occurred to her that her mother could be Isabella. No wonder she and Isabella looked so alike.
""Your mother disappeared in a typhoon not long after you were born, while on a business trip to Thailand,"" Mrs. Parker said through tears, ""That storm was so fierce, it took the lives of more than a dozen people, and when they found the bodies, they were... unrecognizable.""
Cassie felt a tightness in her throat that nearly stopped her breath, while David, who had been listening, tenderly patted her shoulder.
""Your mother was young but formidable,"" Mrs. Parker continued. ""She created the global Fortune 500 company, Peace Group.""
Cassie was stunned. ""Peace Group was founded by my mother?""
Something clicked in her mind, ""No wonder Robert managed to become a major shareholder of Peace Group.""
""What, Robert became a major shareholder?"" Mrs. Parker's heart raced, her breath quickened, ""Could it be that your grandmother has already...""
""She passed away a few days ago.""
Mrs. Parker's eyes widened, and after a moment, tears rolled down her cheeks.
She said bitterly, ""How could your grandmother have passed so quickly? Her death must not have been an accident! Cassie, you don't understand, after your mother died, Peace Group was subtly controlled by your grandparents. To ensure that Robert would take good care of you, she made a legal will. When you came of age, after her death, you and Robert would each inherit thirty percent of Peace Group's shares.""
