Chapter 250
"Walter recoiled in disgust. ""Don't touch me! You're filthy. And don't be too disgusted yourself. The guy might look old, but he's only forty and has been a bachelor for decades because he couldn't find a wife. You'll do just fine with him in the countryside and have his kids.""
Walter left, and behind him, Olivia's cries of despair echoed, but they fell on deaf ears.
In that moment, she was filled with regret, wishing she had never driven Cassie away and caused her grandmother's tragic fall down the stairs.
But there is no antidote for regret in this world.
---
Outside the police station.
Cassie had just finished giving her statement and was stepping outside when someone called her name from behind.
""Cassie.""
Turning around, she saw David approaching her with a smile. A checkered scarf was wrapped around his neck, exuding a gentlemanly charm despite the cold weather.
""Fancy running into you here,"" Cassie said with a faint smile, though seeing him reminded her of those photos and the unpleasantness with Joseph.
""Just bailing out a relative who got into a bit of trouble,"" David said, looking somewhat helpless. ""I heard Robert and Helen got arrested. You're here because of that, aren't you?""
""Yeah, the police needed my statement. Next week, the case moves to the DA's office, and then it’ll be time for their sentencing.""
""Congratulations, you've finally avenged your grandmother,"" David said.
""Thanks."" Cassie’s smile didn’t quite reach her eyes. She looked exhausted.
As they made their way to the parking lot, David cast a concerned glance at Cassie. ""You seem worn out. Do you need some rest?""
""Can we not talk about that, please?"" Cassie interrupted.
""It's all my fault,"" David said with a look of remorse.
""Why would you say that? You helped me that night. Otherwise, I might've done something terrible, and just yesterday you helped clear up the misunderstanding to save my reputation. I should be thanking you,"" Cassie said, shaking her head sincerely.
They continued walking when suddenly, unnoticed by them, a young man walked past them. He seemed like just another passerby until he suddenly pulled out a kitchen knife and lunged at Cassie's chest.
""Look out!""
David realized it was too late to avoid the attack, and as the knife reached her, he swiftly blocked it with his arm, taking the blade into his flesh.
Cassie was horrified. She couldn’t come to terms with what was happening. The man quickly pulled the knife out and lunged at her again. David had no choice but to shield her with his own body. Consequently, the knife plunged into his abdomen.
""Help!"" Cassie screamed, lunging forward to grab the attacker's arm. ""Who are you? I don't even know you!""
""I know you, and that's enough. You're Joseph's woman. I've been tracking you for a while now,"" the man sneered maniacally, continuing his frenzied stabbing.
Fortunately, they were close to the police station. Officers quickly responded to the screams, rushing in and swiftly subduing the assailant."
