Chapter 416

"What?" The abrupt change in topic left her momentarily disoriented.

In their halcyon days at Madison, Cassie would have responded instantly, affirming her love for him without a shred of doubt. But now...

Her momentary hesitation was enough to send Joseph's heart into a free fall. "Is it really that difficult to answer?" he queried.

"Just love. You should get to work," Cassie retorted, gently pushing him away before ascending the staircase.

Joseph watched her retreating figure, his eyes darkening with a mix of confusion and concern. He was no fool; her evasiveness was not lost on him.

Later, at the office.

Agitated, he turned to the internet, typing in a desperate search query: "Why doesn't a woman get jealous?"

The first answer suggested that she was independent and rational, even in love, and possessed self-control.

The second answer posited that she was emotionally strong, trusting, and understanding of her partner.

The third answer bluntly stated: She isn't in love with you enough.

"What?" The third response struck a nerve.

In a fit of frustration, Joseph slammed the cup he was holding onto the desk.

The sudden commotion drew Walter into the room, his face etched with concern. Joseph’s temper had been growing increasingly volatile.

He couldn't make sense of it. Joseph and Miss Brooks appeared to be so in sync, yet Joseph would erupt without any apparent provocation. Walter’s face mirrored his worry; Joseph's condition seemed to be deteriorating.

Meanwhile.

In her expansive office, Cassie was engrossed in scrutinizing the stock prices for Leo Corporation.

Logic dictated that with Leo Chapman in trouble, their stock should have plummeted. Yet, against all odds, the stocks were steadily climbing.

This only solidified her belief in the enigma that was Atlas.

As she was deep in thought, a call came through from Laura Miller. “Guess where I am?”

“Not in the mood for guessing games.”

“Alright, I’ve just pulled up to your company. I figured you’d be upset about your dad. What are good friends for if not to bring New York’s most delicious dessert to cheer you up?” Laura chuckled. “I bet I can do sweet and thoughtful better than Joseph, hmph.”

Cassie paused, then quickly responded, “Don't come into our company, turn around and leave now.”

“Cassie, what do you mean? I’ve driven all this way to comfort you, and I’ve been stuck in traffic for an hour...”

Just as Laura was about to lose her cool, she spotted a familiar figure striding towards her.

Her voice hitched.

The man she had tried so hard to forget was suddenly right before her.

She felt breathless, her mind a whirlwind of conflicting emotions—nervous, flustered, at a loss. "Laura..." Ben approached her, closing the distance between them.

It had been a while since he last saw her, and the girl who used to trail behind him had blossomed into a dazzling, self-assured woman. Her honey-colored, tousled curls framed her face, a red cardigan draped over a casual long white tee, and a pair of Doc Martens completed her effortless look. With minimal makeup highlighting her striking, almost exotic features, she radiated a languid yet vibrant charm.

In the past, every time they reconciled after a breakup, she seemed to have lost a bit more of herself.

But this time, she looked radiant, as if she had been reborn.
