Chapter 1471 Without You
Was it really over?
Nah, some things were just getting started again.
Take Bernice and Lucas, Laura and Michael, for example.
Bernice's eyes were full of mixed emotions. "Laura, Megan's seriously hurt. I think she might end up paralyzed. You and Michael are definitely..."
"That's even better. I've been wanting to divorce him for ages," Laura said with a casual smile. "Once I'm divorced and back on my feet, dinner's on me."
"Divorce him. I totally support you," Cassie chimed in, unable to stand that jerk Michael any longer.
"Laura, you're amazing. You'll definitely find someone better," Bernice said. Everyone knew Laura was way better than Megan, but Michael just couldn't see it.
When Bernice left, Cassie saw her downstairs.
Laura sat alone in the hospital room, tears she couldn't hold back streaming down her face.
She quickly wiped them away.
Was Laura sad? Of course, she was.
Laura felt like her life was a mess. First, she was betrayed by Benjamin, and then by Michael. This time was even worse. Not only was she tricked into marriage, but she was also duped into having a kid.
Laura and Michael hadn't been in love for long. Laura's love for Michael couldn't compare to her love for Benjamin.
But Laura had higher hopes for Michael. She hoped they could give their child a happy home.
Megan's appearance made her unwilling to accept it.
Why? In what way was Laura inferior to Megan?
But when Michael kicked her, he broke not only Laura's rib but also her heart.
Laura thought, 'Men are truly terrifying creatures. When things are good, they give their all. When things are bad, they immediately turn on you.'
Laura was scared, scared of Michael.
At night, Laura was really worried about her child and made a video call to Kennedy. "Kennedy, where's Maeve?"
"Mr. Jude is playing with her." Kennedy pointed the phone camera at the playroom, where Derek and Maeve were having a blast.
Even though Maeve couldn't move much, she was giggling as Derek played with her.
Laura's heart melted at Maeve's cuteness. She really wanted to fly to Maeve's side immediately.
Derek took Kennedy's phone. "You should rest up in the hospital. Maeve's doing great. She really likes me now and doesn't miss you at all. Right, Maeve?"
He pinched Maeve's little face, and Maeve's big eyes sparkled as she laughed, seemingly agreeing with Derek.
Laura felt a bit relieved but also jealous. "But Maeve usually relies on me a lot at night. She might be quite fussy."
"I'll take care of her at night," Derek promised. "No problem at all."
"You're oversimplifying it. Taking care of Maeve at night is very troublesome. She still needs to get up for milk."
"I can handle all that. It's just a small matter."
Seeing his confident look, Laura said, "You'll see tomorrow morning. But if you don't sleep well, what about work tomorrow?"
"My mom said she would help Kennedy take care of Maeve, and Caroline will come over tomorrow too."
Even though Laura and Michael had completely broken up, Caroline was still Maeve's grandmother.
Laura thought for a moment and said, "Derek, don't let Caroline take Maeve back to the Jude Family right now. It's not that I don't trust Caroline; she's good people. But after all this, Michael might think I'm unfit to be Maeve's mom and try to take her from me."
"Laura," Derek said, frowning and hesitating. "There's something I need to tell you. Megan's been resuscitated. The doctors say her legs are definitely crippled, and her hands might barely be able to feed herself after two years of treatment, but working is out of the question. Michael's feeling really guilty at the hospital."
"He was guilty before," Laura said coldly. "He'll probably feel even guiltier now. He might even marry her."
Others might despise Megan, but Michael wouldn't. Michael was very stubborn.
"There's one more thing," Derek said softly. "When the doctors were saving Megan, they found out she had a miscarriage last night. She was covered in injuries and lost a lot of blood. It will be very difficult for her to get pregnant again. Megan was only about two weeks pregnant."
Laura was shocked. After a long time, she stammered, "Was the child Michael's?"
"Probably," Derek guessed. "After all, Michael wasn't angry when he found out. He stayed by Megan's side the whole time."
At that moment, Laura's throat churned, and she felt nauseous.
How long had it been since she and Michael separated? Megan was already more than two weeks pregnant.
Last time, Michael swore he hadn't slept with Megan. He said he only felt sympathy and guilt for Megan.
Now they even had a child together.
Well, Laura's marriage was even more ridiculous.
Fortunately, Laura didn't believe Michael's words and was determined to divorce him.
Derek knew she was upset, but he still said, "Given Michael's character, he will now believe that you ruined Megan and caused her miscarriage. He will feel even more guilty towards Megan and might marry her. Megan, being the person she is, will definitely find ways to retaliate against you. She can't use a child to bind Michael, but she might incite Michael to fight for your child."
Laura felt uneasy.
She hadn't thought of that, but Derek's words made her realize it was a real possibility.
Laura panicked, her voice choked with sobs. "Derek, should I go back to the Presidential Palace to recover? Maeve is my child; I can't lose her."
"Don't panic. I'm just sharing my thoughts. I'll help protect Maeve. With me here, no one will take her away," Derek comforted gently. "I've discussed this with my parents. Everyone knows that keeping Maeve with you is the safest option."
"Derek, thank you. Without you, I really wouldn't know what to do," Laura said, wiping her tears. She meant it; without Derek, she would have been utterly defeated.
"Laura, I'm telling you this not to make you anxious, but to prepare you in case Michael comes to negotiate with you," Derek comforted her gently. "Go to bed early and don't overthink. With me here, no conspiracy will succeed."
"Okay," Laura said, smiling through her tears.
After hanging up, Laura was still a bit distracted.
