Chapter 1309 I Won't Worry About Your Business Anymore

Joseph thought he wasn't quite there yet, so he held back.

"Yeah," he mumbled, "What's up?"

Cassie was like, 'What the heck? Can't I just drop by without a reason?'

She gave him a serious once-over. It had only been two days, but she felt like Joseph was getting all distant on her.

That realization hit her hard. She missed the goofy Joseph from before.

But some things were clear now, and there was no point in dwelling on it.

"Declan called. Isabella's on the run."

Cassie filled him in on their earlier chat, "If Isabella drops the lawsuit, it's gonna be a mess figuring out if Olivia's shares go to Robert or Isabella."

"Got it."

Joseph nodded, looking all calm and handsome. "It's late. You should go chill with Oliver and Sophia."

Cassie thought, 'Is he brushing me off again?' She felt a bit ticked off. "You don't get how serious this is. No matter who gets the shares, you're gonna lose your power again."

"The Hernandez Group's got nothing to do with you." Seeing her worried look, Joseph cut her off. "You don't need to stress so much."

Cassie felt like she'd been slapped. She snapped, "You think I wanna deal with this? I feel like you got tangled up with Cassie and Isabella because of me. So yeah, I feel kinda responsible."

"It's not your problem. The Hernandez Group would attract haters and hostile takeovers even without Olivia and David. I couldn't protect the company before 'cause I wasn't good enough and the Hernandez family wasn't united."

Joseph's face was serious. "As a business leader, I gotta be strong enough to handle all this. If I lose, it means I'm not capable. Even if I don't lose to David today, I'll lose to someone else someday. You don't need to feel guilty or think you gotta be responsible for the Hernandez Group and the Hernandez family."

Cassie was speechless.

She was at a loss for words.

Joseph made sense. But his brain was still healing, and he was a newbie. How could he handle Isabella and David's craziness?

"But..." She finally spoke up.

"Cassie, stop taking everything on your shoulders. I just want you to be my girlfriend, not my wife. Be a bit more selfish." Joseph suddenly said.

Cassie was taken aback and then laughed. "Got it. I won't worry about your business anymore."

Joseph frowned. He didn't want her to be exhausted, not to blame her. "Cassie, try to trust me."

"Yeah, yeah, I will..." Cassie nodded, not really meaning it.

She turned and walked back to her room, step by step.

She wanted to trust him, but he was just starting out in business, and the professor was still teaching him.

She thought, 'No matter how strong he is, how can he handle this crisis? Forget it, I don't wanna worry anymore.

He's right. The Hernandez Group isn't my company after all.

What does it have to do with me?'

Joseph watched her walk away, his face twisted with pain and his brows knitted tight.

He knew his words probably stung.

But with the Hernandez Group's mess still hanging over him, he couldn't afford to get all emotional.

He shut the door, went to his room, and dialed a number. "Joel, when are you getting back?"

"Tomorrow morning, Mr. Hernandez. We've got some leads."

"Good," he replied.

The next evening.

Kathleen had been running around all day and finally dragged herself back to her swanky duplex apartment, totally wiped out.

This place, right in the heart of the city, was the envy of many for its prime location.

But no one knew the loneliness she felt. Coming back here, she was always alone.

Today, as she flicked on the light, she suddenly saw a tall figure chilling in her living room and screamed her head off.

"Calm down."

The man's deep voice was steady and commanding, like he owned the place.

Kathleen took a deep breath and managed to calm down.

She looked at the man in front of her. Dressed in black trousers and a dark shirt, his broad shoulders and long legs were perfectly proportioned, and his handsome face was unforgettable.

Joseph!

The guy who used to be the big shot in Madison.

But wasn't he supposed to be all messed up now?

Did he look messed up? Nope, he seemed even more intense and scary than before.

"What are you doing in my house?" Kathleen finally found her voice. "I know you're beefing with David. You wouldn't use me as a pawn, would you? Don't even think about it. David will stop at nothing. Even if you kill me, he won't back down."

"Looks like you know David pretty well now. That's good." Joseph smirked and got more comfortable.

Kathleen was stunned, her eyes darting around to see if anyone else was there, planning her escape.

"Relax. I'm not here to take you hostage. You mean nothing to David. Even if I kidnapped his parents, he wouldn't care. After all, he's the kind of guy who'd harm his own nephew."

Kathleen's eyes suddenly filled with tears.

"Do you want to avenge your son?" Joseph asked, looking at her.

"Of course I do, but don't think you can use me. Cassie once said it was Joseph who harmed Arthur, but I dug around for ages and found nothing." Kathleen said angrily.

"What if you find the motive?"

Joseph tossed his phone to her. Kathleen saw a video on it. She clicked it, and a woman appeared on the screen. It was Lola, David's secretary. Cassie had once exposed a video of David and Lola getting it on in the office.

She hit play, and Lola said fearfully, "I don't know if Arthur's death is related to David. I only know that Arthur caught David and me having sex in the office that day. David had just married Cassie not long ago. Arthur and David had a fight and then left. But a few hours later, I heard he died in a car accident on the way to Cassie's company."

Kathleen listened, feeling horrified.

"Impossible!" She shook her head, her eyes red with rage. "You made her say that, didn't you?"
