Chapter 172
"David knew Olivia was vindictive, especially after Height Company's collapse. She was capable of anything, possibly even targeting Cassie. Without hesitation, he headed to the room she'd just been seen emerging from, only to find the door locked. Pressing his ear against it, he could barely make out a woman's screams.
It was Cassie.
Damn it!
Seizing a chair from the hallway, David smashed the door open and burst inside to find two men pinning Cassie to the ground, her clothing torn to tatters, her face flushed red, still fighting back with all her might.
""Who the hell are you?"" The bodyguards faltered at the sight of an intruder.
David rushed in with swift justice, knocking the men to the ground. Sensing their defeat, they scrambled away.
There was no time to chase them. David scooped Cassie into his arms, enveloping her in the comforting scent. Overwhelmed, she instinctively clung to him.
The assistant stepped in, blushing at the scene, quickly closed the door, and retreated with haste.
David felt a twinge of fear, but he knew Cassie had eaten something unclean and he wasn't about to take advantage of her vulnerability.
He stepped back firmly and said, ""Cassie, come on, snap out of it. Let's get you to the hospital.""
""No.""
Cassie's teeth chattered, ""I feel awful.""
Her scent was uniquely intoxicating.
In that moment, David's mind raced with memories of their first encounter. He'd been in love with her for some time but she always kept him at arm's length, leaving him clueless about how to get close to her.
He would have given anything to spend his life with her.
This was an opportunity.
He admitted that in that moment, his selfish desires had gotten the better of his gentlemanly conduct.
""Cassie, marry me. I'll take care of you,"" he blurted out before scooping her into his arms and kissing her deeply.
Cassie instinctively clung to him, but the sudden ring of her phone on the floor snapped her back to reality. Joseph's voice echoed in her mind. With a jolt of the last bit of her sobriety, she pushed David away and bit down hard on her wrist, drawing blood.
""Cassie..."" David's heart ached.
""We can't,"" Cassie shook her head in agony, ""Please, take me to the bathroom.""
""I'm sorry.""
Embarrassed but caring, David carried her to the bathroom.
He set her in the tub and she turned on the faucet, letting the cold water cascade over her, calming her slightly.
The incessant ringing of her phone outside likely meant Joseph was calling. If she didn't answer, he'd surely suspect her of betrayal.
""Mr. Foster, could you grab my phone for me?"" Cassie's lips trembled as she asked.
""Sure.""
