Chapter 1021 Saving Cassie Quickly

Joseph was floored. He never imagined Marcus had been so conniving over twenty years ago. "Why was he after you? Wasn't Mom already with him back then?"

"Because I messed up his plan," Cameron said, his voice heavy. "Over thirty years ago, your mom, Marcus, and I were all at the same school. Your mom was the dream girl for every guy, and I was just a regular student. We met through the student council. But Marcus had a better family background. At a party, he spiked your mom's drink with an aphrodisiac."

Joseph's eyebrows knitted together. "But Mom always said you used dirty tricks back then."

"I never even thought about getting with your mom to climb the ladder," Cameron said coldly. "That was all Marcus's setup. I drank that spiked wine, and Marcus got held up by someone. Later, you were born, and the Hernandez family made me marry into their family."

Joseph frowned. He knew about the marriage.

Even though Cameron's family wasn't well-off, he had great grades and won various awards, so he had a good reputation. The Hernandez family agreed to the marriage.

"So, you ruined Marcus's plan?" Joseph asked.

"Yeah." Cameron nodded. "Marcus was supposed to marry into the Hernandez family, but I messed it up. He really liked Mabel back then, so he hated me. Even after Mabel and I got married, we argued a lot, but if it weren't for Marcus's constant meddling, we might not have divorced. What I couldn't stand was that Mabel soon got pregnant with Marcus's child."

"What happened to you abroad?" Joseph pressed.

A deep hatred flashed in Cameron's eyes. "This scar on my face is from that time. Half my face was almost destroyed, but what I hated most was that your grandma died protecting me from those people."

Cameron lowered his head and lit a cigarette, taking a deep drag.

Joseph clenched his fists, struggling to believe it. He barely remembered her face because he mostly stayed with the Hernandez family. His only memory was that she was very kind.

He hadn't expected she was killed because of Marcus.

It turned out he had a deep-seated grudge against the Chamberlain family for a long time.

Cameron continued, "To escape Marcus, I couldn't even use my passport. I was miserable, sleeping in alleys and eating leftovers. Sometimes, I did illegal work and got cheated out of my wages. I was a top student but ended up like that."

Joseph's throat tightened painfully. He always thought Cameron had abandoned him and was living comfortably abroad.

"Did Marcus really go that far?" Joseph asked.

"Yeah, and the worst part is Marcus was so good at pretending. Almost everyone in Madison saw him as a gentle, refined guy who loved Mabel and art."

Cameron laughed bitterly. "To everyone else, I was the shameless guy who'd do anything to get close to your mom. No matter what I said, she always thought I was trying to ruin her relationship with Marcus. No one believed me."

"Dad, I'm sorry," Joseph said softly. He no longer felt any resentment toward Cameron.

Growing up had been tough for him, and it seemed Cameron had it just as bad.

"No, I should be the one apologizing. I'm a man, yet I couldn't even protect my own son," Cameron said, shaking his head in self-blame. "After five years of hiding, I smuggled myself to Yugrot. I changed my name and identity there. I came back once, wanting to see you, but when I found out you were at a boarding school, I didn't want to disturb you. Later, I worked hard in Yugrot, started a company, and created the Garrison Group. I also heard you had become the richest man in Madison. As your dad, I wanted to make the company bigger so we could reunite, but then I heard about the Hernandez family's troubles."

"So, you were the one who bought the Hernandez House?" Joseph asked.

"Yes." Cameron frowned and snorted. "If it weren't for helping you, I wouldn't have bought the Hernandez House."

Joseph understood. Cameron must still hate Mabel. If he were in Cameron's shoes, he would hate her too.

"Dad, why didn't you recognize me earlier? Last time at Snowford Evergreen, I even crashed into your car." Joseph laughed.

"It wasn't the right time," Cameron chuckled. "Besides, I knew the Hernandez family wanted to cooperate with the Garrison Group. I was waiting for you. It took you so long to come."

Joseph felt a bit embarrassed. During that time, he was so lost and demotivated that he had no mind for work.

"Marcus would never have expected you to be the chairman of the Garrison Group. Felix even wanted to visit you just now," Joseph said with a playful smile.

"It's not time for Marcus to know yet." Cameron shook his head. "Even now, I'm not necessarily a match for the Chamberlain family. They've long allied with the Lundrigans Group."

"I figured that." Joseph sneered. "The chip data was handed over to the Lundrigans Group by the Chamberlain family."

"That's secondary. The Chamberlain family has a group of mysterious assassins behind them," Cameron said. "Otherwise, why do you think Marcus could mobilize so many people to hunt me down overseas more than twenty years ago?"

Joseph felt a deep chill down his spine.

"I've been investigating your situation recently," Cameron suddenly said. "David is colluding with the Chamberlain family."

"I suspected it long ago." Joseph frowned irritably. "I'm worried he's another Marcus."

Cameron looked at him and smiled, patting his shoulder. "Don't worry. I warned him. He won't touch Cassie for now."

Cameron explained, "I had people warn David before. He doesn't know my identity, and he's afraid I'll kill him. But recently, he's been investigating my identity. I don't think I can hide it for long. Joseph, you need to find a way to get Cassie to divorce David as soon as possible."

A trace of unease crossed Joseph's face. "I want to, but she trusts David a lot."

"You mustn't let David be with her," Cameron said seriously. "I suspect David's approach to Cassie isn't just because he likes her; there's an ulterior motive."

Joseph was confused. "What motive?"

If David had wanted to climb up to the Chapman family before, now that Aiden had left the Chapman family, what value did Cassie have for him?
