Chapter 333

She felt as if she had fallen into a terrible abyss. It was the most horrific nightmare of her life.

---

At two in the morning, Joseph came to his senses from his fury and was startled by his state.

Next to him, the woman lay curled up in agony, her face deathly pale and her lips colorless.

"Cassie!" he exclaimed, his heart skipping a beat.

But there was yet to be a response.

Alarmed, Joseph quickly wrapped the woman in a sheet and rushed her to the hospital.

In the lonely hospital corridor late at night, Joseph stood by a floor-to-ceiling window, his hand trembling as he struggled to light his cigarette.

"Let me do it," Lucas, clothed in his white lab coat, said as he approached to light the cigarette, his gaze filled with complexity. "You've lost control. Is it the disease flaring up again? Your smoking has gotten worse, too."

"I saw Mabel today and got a little emotional," Joseph muttered in disarray. "How is she doing?"

"The female doctor here already checked on her." Lucas glanced at him, "You've been reckless. The doctor said Cas Cassie has just become a woman and needs to rest for at least a few days, but look at you."

"What did you say?" Joseph's head snapped around.

"Dr. Olivia said so, you know." Lucas' words boomed like a detonation in Joseph's mind, leaving a buzzing sound. "I spared no expense to recruit her from abroad, and she's a top-tier talent. She's seen so many patients; her experience is unmatched."

Could it be true that Cassie and David were innocent?

Had he misjudged her?

"Did nothing happen with David?" Joseph's commonly strategic mind felt overwhelmed.

Hadn't she spent a whole night with David after taking some pills?

Wasn't she engaged to David?

"Dr. Olivia wouldn't lie."

Joseph's lips felt dry and rough; with David locked up, she obviously couldn't have done anything with him. It was apparent he might have misunderstood her.

Thinking of the harsh words he had once said to her, he was wracked with regret and pain, wanting to slap himself for what he had done.

Could it be that what she endured that night was precisely as she claimed? Getting through it by soaking in cold water?

Lucas remarked thoughtfully, "Seeing all those intimate photos of her and David, I thought they'd... I never expected that after such a long engagement, in the end, you'd be the one to benefit. Do you think David will die of regret?"

Joseph's brows were tightly knit. He didn't know about David's regrets, but he certainly was filled with his own.

This regret was amplified as he stood in the hospital room, looking at Cassie's pale face—his desire to slap himself for his actions intensified.

Reflecting on his recent behavior, he felt utterly inhumane.

He needed to make it up to her and vowed never to let her return to David.

At that moment, Cassie's eyelashes began to flutter.

Joseph, uncertain of how to face her, felt utterly lost.

Cassie slowly opened her eyes, and upon seeing the tall silhouette standing against the backlight at the edge of the bed, the horrifying memories rushed into her mind.

Her body shook violently, and she turned as white as porcelain. "Don't come any closer!"

Genuine fear flashed in her eyes, and she shrank away, her clear eyes filled with dread.

A deep pain struck Joseph's heart. He reached out, wanting to comfort her, "Don't be afraid, I won't ever..."

"Ah, don't touch me!" Cassie screamed, diving under the covers, her body shaking like a leaf. "I'm scared, okay? I shouldn't have hit you. From now on, do whatever you want with me; I've learned my lesson!"
