Chapter 1008 Was Joseph Dead?
Cassie was baffled. "What's wrong with me?"
"You scared me to death." Laura sighed in relief. "Right after you left, the elevator at the party malfunctioned."
Cassie's heart skipped a beat. "What happened?"
"The elevator plummeted. A staff member saw a man and a woman get in and go down. It fell from the twentieth floor to the ground, making a huge noise."
Laura's voice trembled. "It must have been guests leaving my party. How could this happen? A grand event turned into a disaster. The police and ambulance are on their way, but the people inside... they won't make it. I called to make sure you were okay. If you and David were in there, I'd go crazy."
Cassie was stunned.
For some reason, she remembered what Joseph had said tonight.
'He came for me. What if I left? Would he leave, too? Could he be in the elevator?' The thought flashed through her mind, and her face turned pale.
"Cassie, it's chaotic here, but knowing you're safe puts me at ease," Laura said and then hung up.
Cassie gripped her phone tightly. David held her hand, his tone worried. "What happened?"
"Laura told me the elevator at the hotel we were just at fell. She was worried I was inside," Cassie explained absentmindedly.
David frowned. "Did anyone get hurt?"
"It must have been tonight's guests," Cassie said weakly, "I don't know who. The police haven't arrived yet, and no one dares to open the door."
"How could something like this happen?" David murmured. "I hope there aren't too many people inside."
"Laura said there was a man and a woman," Cassie said.
David's expression changed but returned to normal within seconds.
"David, maybe you should go back. With something like this happening, Laura must be feeling down. I want to be with her," Cassie suddenly said.
"Okay, I'll go with you, so you don't get scared," David said gently.
"No need. Just drop me at the door. I'll stay with Laura tonight. You should go back and rest early," Cassie said, feeling uneasy and not in the mood to talk to David.
"Alright," David said, giving her a deep look.
He thought to himself, 'Let her go. After all, Joseph is dead now. Joseph will never appear in their world again.'
Ten minutes later, Cassie received a message from Laura: [Cassie, I have some bad news for you]
Seeing the message, Cassie's heart trembled.
Laura's words made the possibility in her mind seem more real.
She didn't want to hear it.
But Laura still sent the message: [I checked the surveillance, Joseph walked into the elevator that fell]
Cassie stared at the text, her mind blank.
She thought to herself, 'Joseph was in the elevator? He's dead. How could that be? Just a few hours ago, Joseph was kissing me, and now he's suddenly dead. How come? I can still remember his breath, his scent, his magnetic voice that always made me angry. In the blink of an eye, Joseph became a corpse.'
She felt like her heart was being squeezed by a force, making it hard to breathe.
Her mind was blank. Even her hand holding the phone was trembling slightly.
She hated Joseph. When he had her trapped on the island, she hated him so much she wished he would die. But why, upon hearing the news of his death, did she feel so lost and panicked?
Laura's message came again: [Are you okay?]
She looked down, her fingers trembling as she replied: [Are you sure?]
Laura: [Absolutely, I saw the surveillance. He went down with Mr. Dixon's daughter, Marigold Dixon. The elevator lost control just two floors down. There's no way he could have survived.]
Cassie stared at the words, stunned.
At this moment, David also received a message, his pupils widening.
He cursed in his mind, 'Is Marigold dead? Damn it. Fortunately, I haven't been involved; I just gave a suggestion. Even if investigated, it wouldn't lead back to me. Though it is a pity, it is just a woman. As long as Joseph is dead, nothing else matters.'
He glanced at the devastated Cassie beside him, his lips curling coldly in the dim light.
Laura must have told her about Joseph's death.
Even though she always said she no longer loved Joseph, her reaction to the news of his death didn't seem as detached as her words.
When the car returned to the hotel entrance, Cassie forgot to even say goodbye and got out immediately.
She ran towards the hotel, where ambulances and firefighters had just arrived.
Everyone was gathered on the first floor. When Laura saw her, she walked up. "Why did you come back?"
"Have they retrieved the bodies?" Cassie stared at her.
"They're about to." Laura sighed, holding her hand and finding it ice-cold. "Cassie, try to stay calm."
"I'm very calm. He is just my ex-husband. He did so many horrible things to me. He deserved it," Cassie said expressionlessly, but as she cursed, her throat tightened painfully, and her eyes reddened.
She didn't know what was wrong with her.
She just felt very uncomfortable, like her feet were floating in the air.
"Laura, I'm not sad. Maybe I just feel guilty. He said he came back tonight because of me. If I hadn't come, he wouldn't have died." Cassie looked at her in confusion.
Madison's once most dazzling Joseph had inexplicably died in an elevator. How ridiculous.
Laura didn't know what to say, just looked at her sadly.
Nearby, Ralph's wife, Ophelia, was also crying, and Ralph was angrily yelling at the hotel manager, "The elevator suddenly malfunctioned. This is your hotel's responsibility. I won't let you off."
Firefighters pried open the door and went down with ropes. Everyone held their breath, looking into the dark below.
"Dad, Mom," Suddenly, Marigold cried out.
Ralph and Ophelia froze, turning around to see Marigold standing behind them, looking disheveled. Her white dress was half-torn, and she was wrapped in a black suit jacket. Beside her stood Joseph.
Joseph had lost his suit jacket, wearing only a shirt with his tie hanging loosely, looking a bit disheveled but exuding a lazy, devil-may-care attitude.
